South American Tropical Forest

The South American Tropical Forest is one of the most immersive exhibits at the San Francisco Zoo, wrapping visitors in the sights, sounds, and warmth of a living rainforest. Towering tropical plants fill the glass-enclosed structure, and free-flying scarlet macaws and parrots swoop overhead or land just feet from the path. Poison dart frogs glow electric blue and red behind glass panels, while giant anacondas coil in their enclosures — big enough to impress even older kids.

The air inside is warm and humid, a welcome contrast to the often foggy SF weather outside.

For families with kids ages 3-12, this exhibit hits the sweet spot: short enough that young attention spans stay engaged, visually spectacular enough that older kids put down their phones, and peaceful enough that toddlers can take it all in without being overwhelmed. Strollers navigate the paths easily, and nursing parents will find restrooms with changing facilities nearby.

The South American Tropical Forest is included in standard SF Zoo admission, so there's no extra cost. Combine it with Penguin Island and Hearst Grizzly Gulch for a full day at the zoo.
