About
Joe DiMaggio Playground is the heart of North Beach family life — named after the local legend who grew up in the neighborhood, it sits on Lombard Street in the middle of one of San Francisco's most charming and walkable areas. This is the playground you visit when you're already doing a North Beach day, and it transitions seamlessly into the surrounding neighborhood experience.
The playground has excellent SF Rec & Park equipment: climbing structures sized for multiple age groups, swings, and a dedicated little-kid area for younger toddlers. The on-site recreation center provides restrooms and occasional seasonal programming. Washington Square Park — a wide open lawn with park benches and excellent people-watching — is right next door, giving families overflow space for picnics, toddler running, and general relaxation while older kids use the playground.
North Beach is SF's Italian neighborhood, and the food within walking distance of this playground is legitimately excellent by any standard. Liguria Bakery has been selling focaccia since 1911 and opens at 8am. Golden Boy Pizza on Green Street has been feeding locals for decades.
Mario's Bohemian Cigar Store does outstanding paninis. Half a dozen gelato shops are on Columbus Avenue. Combining a playground visit with lunch in North Beach is one of San Francisco's better family activity combinations.
For visiting families, the location makes it easy to connect a playground stop with Fisherman's Wharf (a 15-minute walk), Coit Tower (10-minute uphill walk), and the Ferry Building (20-minute walk or quick Muni ride). The playground is free, the neighborhood is spectacular, and the combination of park space plus excellent food makes it worth a half-day plan.

North Beach is one of SF's best neighborhoods for casual family dining. Mario's Bohemian Cigar Store on Columbus Ave for paninis, Golden Boy Pizza for slices, and multiple gelato shops on Columbus make this a great food stop after the playground.
Why Kids Love It
Joe DiMaggio Playground is in the heart of North Beach — San Francisco's Italian neighborhood — and it's the kind of playground where kids can burn energy while parents soak up one of the city's most charming streetscapes. The playground itself has well-maintained climbing structures and plenty of space, but the setting is what makes it special: Washington Square Park is next door, North Beach's cafes and gelato shops are steps away, and Coit Tower is visible above the rooflines. For visiting families doing San Francisco, this is the playground that fits neatly into a Fisherman's Wharf and North Beach day.
