About
The Exploratorium is one of the finest science museums in the world, and it happens to be in one of the most spectacular settings imaginable -- perched on Pier 15 along San Francisco's Embarcadero waterfront. Founded in 1969 by physicist Frank Oppenheimer, this museum was a pioneer of the hands-on, interactive exhibit model that science centers worldwide now emulate.
Inside, you will find over 650 exhibits spread across six main galleries, each exploring a different facet of science, art, and human perception. The Tinkering Studio lets kids build, solder, and create with real tools under expert guidance. The Living Systems gallery features dissection stations and live animal exhibits that fascinate budding biologists.
The outdoor Fisher Bay Observatory Gallery puts you right on the water with exhibits that harness real wind, fog, and tidal currents.
For families, the Exploratorium strikes a rare balance: toddlers can happily splash at water tables and spin kaleidoscope wheels, while teenagers get genuinely challenged by optics puzzles and electronics stations. The museum does not talk down to kids, and that respect is what keeps them engaged for hours.
The Tactile Dome deserves special mention. This pitch-black, crawl-through dome is navigated entirely by touch -- no light at all. Kids (and adults) feel their way through textured tunnels, slides, and chambers.
It is thrilling for kids roughly age 7 and up, though some younger children find the darkness too intense. Reservations are required and cost extra, but it is consistently rated the highlight of the visit.
Practical considerations: the museum is fully stroller-accessible, though you may want to park the stroller at the entrance coat check since narrow exhibit aisles get crowded. Nursing rooms are available near the restrooms on the main floor. The on-site cafe, Seismic Joint, serves sandwiches, salads, and kid-friendly options like mac and cheese and pizza, though prices are steep ($12-18 per entree).
Parking at Pier 15 is limited and expensive ($7/hour). The better move is taking BART to Embarcadero station and walking 15 minutes along the waterfront, or using the F-line historic streetcar that stops right outside. If you do drive, the Pier 19.5 parking lot next door usually has availability.
Allow at least three hours for a thorough visit. Most families end up staying four hours, especially if kids get hooked on the tinkering stations. The gift shop is excellent -- heavy on actual science kits and books rather than junky souvenirs.

Plan Your Visit
Best Time to Visit
Weekday mornings right at opening for shortest lines. Avoid school field trip season (April-May) when it gets very crowded.
Wait Times
10-20 minutes at popular exhibits on weekends; minimal waits on weekday mornings
Nearby Food
Ferry Building Marketplace (5 min walk) has Gott's Roadside burgers, Boulettes Larder, and Humphry Slocombe ice cream. Pier 39 food court is a 15-minute walk north.
Why Kids Love It
Kids go wild for the Tactile Dome, a pitch-black maze you navigate entirely by touch. The outdoor gallery lets them play with wind, water, and fog sculptures right on the bay. Every single exhibit invites touching, spinning, and experimenting -- the opposite of a boring hands-off museum.
Pro Tips from Parents
- Start at the back of the museum and work forward -- most visitors cluster near the entrance exhibits first
- The Tactile Dome requires a separate timed reservation ($15 extra) and sells out fast -- book online in advance
- Thursday evenings (6-9 PM) are adults-only After Dark events, great for a parents' night out
- Bring layers -- the outdoor terrace exhibits get windy and cold even in summer
- The museum cafe has decent food but is pricey; eating before or after at nearby Ferry Building is a better value
What to Bring
- layers/jacket for outdoor exhibits
- comfortable walking shoes
- hand sanitizer
- reusable water bottle
