About

The Children's Creativity Museum is a small but mighty gem tucked into the Yerba Buena Gardens complex in SoMa. Unlike traditional museums where kids look but cannot touch, this place is entirely about creating -- making animated movies, composing music, building with recycled materials, and exploring digital art tools. It flies under the radar compared to the Exploratorium and Academy of Sciences, but for kids ages 3-12, it delivers an intensely engaging experience at a fraction of the cost and crowds.

The Animation Studio is the headline attraction and what sets this museum apart. Kids create their own stop-motion animated films using clay figures, LEGO bricks, or drawn characters. They move the figures frame by frame, capture each shot on a computer, add sound effects and music, and walk away with a finished short film they can take home.

The process takes 20-30 minutes and is absorbing enough that kids often want to make a second movie. Staff members are helpful and patient, guiding kids through the technical steps without taking over the creative decisions.

The Music Studio is the other major draw. Kids experiment with digital instruments, loop pedals, mixing boards, and recording equipment to compose original songs. There are also traditional instruments to play. The technology-meets-creativity approach resonates with kids who might not consider themselves artistic -- everyone can make something that sounds cool.

Other exhibits rotate but typically include a maker space with recycled materials for building, a digital painting station, and a community art project. The museum occupies two floors and is compact enough that toddlers do not get lost or overwhelmed, but substantial enough to keep school-age kids engaged for 2-3 hours.

The museum's location in Yerba Buena Gardens is a major bonus for families. Directly adjacent is a large public playground with climbing structures, slides, and a labyrinth -- completely free. The LeRoy King Carousel ($4/ride) is just outside, and in winter, an outdoor ice skating rink opens in the gardens.

You can easily build a half-day outing: museum in the morning, picnic lunch on the gardens' lawn, playground in the afternoon.

Practical details: the museum is small and intimate, which is a strength for families. You will never feel lost or overwhelmed here. Strollers are fine on both floors (elevator available).

Restrooms with changing tables are clean and accessible. There is no food service inside, but the surrounding Yerba Buena and SoMa neighborhood has abundant restaurants and the Metreon food court is one block away.

Admission is a flat $14 per person for anyone over 2 years old -- no separate adult and child pricing. It is not cheap for what is a small museum, but the hands-on creative experiences provide genuine value that passive exhibits cannot match. Check the website for occasional free community days.

One important note: the museum is closed Monday and Tuesday. Wednesday through Friday are the quietest visit days; Saturdays tend to have birthday parties in the private rooms, which can increase crowd levels in the shared spaces.

Why Kids Love It

Kids create their own stop-motion animated movies in the animation studio and take them home on a USB drive. The music studio lets them compose and record songs with real instruments and digital tools. It is a museum where everything is about making things, not just looking at things.
