Duck Donuts started right here on the Outer Banks — in Duck, NC, about 20 minutes north — and the Nags Head location on Croatan Highway is the easiest one to hit if you're staying in the central OBX area. The whole concept is simple: warm, made-to-order cake donuts with your choice of coating, topping, and drizzle. Kids lose their minds over it.

You walk up to the counter, pick your combo (vanilla icing with sprinkles is the classic kid order, but the maple bacon is legitimately great), and watch them make it right there. The donuts come off the line warm. Not room temperature, not reheated — actually warm. That matters because a fresh Duck Donut and a cold one are two completely different experiences.

Pricing runs about $2.25 per donut individually, or $27 for a dozen. For a family of four, expect to spend $18-$28 depending on whether you add drinks. Their coffee and hot chocolate are fine but nothing special — you're here for the donuts.

The space inside is small. There's a handful of tables but most families grab and go, especially in summer. Strollers fit but it gets tight when there's a line. There's a single restroom with a changing station.

Summer mornings are the big crunch. The line regularly stretches out the door by 10 AM from June through August. If you can get there by 8:30 or 9, you'll walk right up. Off-season — October through April — there's almost never a wait. Online ordering helps a ton during peak weeks; you skip the line entirely and just pick up at the counter.

One thing worth knowing: these are cake donuts, not yeast donuts. They're denser, a little crunchier on the outside, softer inside. Some kids who are used to Krispy Kreme-style donuts might be surprised by the texture, but most prefer them once they try one warm.
