About

Universal Islands of Adventure has been Orlando's premier thrill-ride park since it opened in 1999, and it still holds that title even as new parks have opened around it. The combination of Harry Potter's Hogsmeade, Hagrid's Motorbike Adventure, and VelociCoaster creates an argument that Islands of Adventure has the best concentration of world-class attractions of any theme park in Florida.

Hagrid's Magical Creatures Motorbike Adventure is frequently voted the best theme park ride in the world. It's a motorbike/sidecar roller coaster that travels through a dense magical forest, encounters magical creatures, and uses a combination of physical environments and special effects that hold up at every height. The 48-inch minimum means school-age kids can experience it, and they will want to immediately get back in line.

The wait is almost always long — plan to arrive at park opening and head here first.

VelociCoaster, which opened in 2021, is faster and more technically demanding — a genuinely excellent steel coaster for teens and adults who want maximum thrill. The Jurassic World area is worth the visit for the soaking water ride (bring ponchos).

For younger or less intense riders, Seuss Landing has the Cat in the Hat dark ride and the Caro-Seuss-El carousel — both fun for 4-7 year olds. Hogsmeade delivers the full Harry Potter immersion: Ollivanders wand shop, Honeydukes candy store, Three Broomsticks for meals, and Flight of the Hippogriff for younger coaster fans (36-inch minimum).

Practical note: bring rain ponchos. Several rides — particularly Jurassic World — will drench you. Open shoes like sandals are not allowed on most major rides. The Universal app tracks live wait times and is essential for real-time planning.

Plan Your Visit

Best Time to Visit

Arrive at opening and head straight to Hagrid's Motorbike Adventure — it builds the longest wait in the park by 10AM. Weekdays in January-February and September are least crowded.

Wait Times

60-90 min for Hagrid's on peak days; 15-30 min for most other rides at opening

Nearby Food

Three Broomsticks in Hogsmeade is the best sit-down value in the park — butterbeer and hearty meals at reasonable prices for a theme park. CityWalk just outside has 30+ additional restaurants.

Why Kids Love It

Islands of Adventure is the thrill-ride capital of Orlando — VelociCoaster is one of the fastest, most technically impressive coasters in the country, and Hagrid's Magical Creatures Motorbike Adventure is widely considered the best ride in any theme park. But it's not just for big-kids: Hogsmeade village lets younger kids cast wand spells, buy Butterbeer, and board the Hogwarts Express, while Seuss Landing has rides and play areas for the littlest park-goers. The sheer density of world-class attractions is what sets Islands of Adventure apart.

Pro Tips from Parents

  • Hagrid's Motorbike Adventure is best done first thing when the park opens — or last in the evening. The virtual queue sometimes activates; check the Universal app immediately upon entry.
  • VelociCoaster (48-inch minimum) is thrilling enough for teens and adults but genuinely intense — preview it if your kids are coaster-nervous.
  • Hogsmeade in Islands of Adventure is the original Wizarding World and arguably more charming than Diagon Alley — budget at least 2 hours here.
  • The Jurassic World area has a water ride (Jurassic World Ride) that will soak you — bring ponchos or change of clothes.
  • Marvel Super Hero Island has excellent character meets and shorter waits than Potter-area attractions.

What to Bring
