Port St. Lucie Botanical Gardens is one of Florida's best-kept family secrets — a well-maintained 18-acre botanical garden on the Treasure Coast where admission is completely free (donations accepted). For families who want a beautiful, educational, outdoor experience without paying theme park prices, this is an excellent find.

The garden is organized into distinct rooms including a butterfly garden, a rose garden, an herb garden, a children's discovery garden, and native Florida plant sections. The children's discovery garden is designed specifically for sensory engagement — textured plants, fragrant herbs, and elements that encourage touching and smelling rather than hands-off observing. Young children who are learning about the natural world in a hands-on way respond well to this format.

The butterfly garden draws native Florida butterfly species throughout the year, with peak activity in fall and spring. Standing quietly for a few minutes typically produces multiple butterfly visits, which young children find thrilling.
