About
There are playgrounds, and then there are playgrounds with personality. Hippo Playground in Riverside Park falls firmly in the second category. Named for its beloved hippo sculptures that have delighted generations of Upper West Side children, this waterfront playground is an NYC institution.
The hippos are the stars. Three large hippo statues — perfectly sized for kids to climb, straddle, and use as imaginary transportation — anchor the playground with a sense of whimsy you don't find everywhere. Your kids will spend a surprising amount of time just on the hippos before even touching the main play equipment.
In summer, the water play feature transforms the playground. Jets of water shoot up from the ground, and kids absolutely lose their minds with joy. Bring a towel, a change of clothes, and accept that your child will get completely soaked. This is one of the best free water play experiences in Manhattan.
Beyond the playground itself, the setting is exceptional. Riverside Park stretches along the Hudson River, offering some of Manhattan's most scenic green space. After playground time, a short walk brings you to the waterfront where you can watch boats on the Hudson and let older kids burn more energy on the greenway path.
Weekend mornings are busy — this is a beloved neighborhood spot for UWS families. If you're visiting and want more elbow room, aim for a weekday or late afternoon visit. The playground stays open until 8PM, making it an ideal after-dinner destination in summer when daylight lingers.
