About
Ardastra Gardens is the kind of place that doesn't look like much from the outside but completely wins over every kid who walks through the gate. Spread across four acres of lush tropical gardens in the Chippingham neighborhood, this small zoo and conservation center has been a Nassau fixture since 1937, and its flamingo marching show is genuinely one of the most memorable family experiences in the Bahamas.
Three times daily (10:30 AM, 2:15 PM, and 4:00 PM), a flock of Caribbean flamingos performs a choreographed march under the direction of their keeper. It sounds quirky — because it is — but watching these impossibly pink birds strut in formation while your kids shriek with delight is worth the price of admission alone. After the show, the flamingos roam the grounds freely, and kids can walk right up to them (gently) for photos.
Beyond the flamingos, there's a surprising amount packed into this compact space. The lorikeet feeding station lets kids hold cups of nectar while brilliantly colored parrots land on their arms, shoulders, and sometimes their heads. The Aldabra giant tortoises are gentle enough for toddlers to pet, and the capuchin monkeys provide endless entertainment with their acrobatics.
You'll also find iguanas, parrots, macaws, and various native Bahamian species throughout the gardens.
The botanical garden setting is beautiful and well-shaded, which matters in the Bahamas heat. Winding paths lead through tropical plants and flowers, and the whole property has a peaceful, unhurried feel. Most families spend 1.5 to 2 hours here — long enough to see everything without exhausting small children.
At $16 for adults and $8 for kids (free under 3), Ardastra is one of the best values in Nassau. It pairs perfectly with Fort Charlotte across the street and the Fish Fry at Arawak Cay nearby for a full morning or afternoon outing.

Why Kids Love It
The flamingo marching show steals the entire visit. Three times a day, a flock of Caribbean flamingos literally marches in formation while a zookeeper narrates — and then the birds wander freely so kids can get up close for photos. It's one of those uniquely Bahamian experiences you won't find anywhere else.
Beyond the flamingos, kids love hand-feeding the lorikeets (colorful parrots that land right on their arms), visiting the giant Aldabra tortoises that are older than their grandparents, and spotting the playful capuchin monkeys swinging through their enclosure. The gardens themselves are lush and shaded with tropical plants, making the whole visit feel like a jungle adventure. It's small enough that little legs won't get tired.
