About
Milwaukee County Zoo is a 190-acre zoological park in Wauwatosa that houses over 2,100 animals representing 340 species. It is a classic Midwestern zoo -- large enough to fill a full day but manageable enough that families don't feel overwhelmed.
The zoo train is a genuine highlight, not just a short kiddie ride. A real miniature train loops through the entire property on dedicated tracks, passing through wooded areas and alongside exhibits. From the train, you can spot animals in their outdoor habitats from angles not available from walking paths. Kids can ride as many times as they want ($3.50/ride).
The giraffe feeding station allows visitors to hand-feed giraffes during scheduled sessions. Watching a giraffe's 18-inch tongue wrap around a leaf in your child's hand creates a lasting memory. Check the daily schedule and arrive early -- feeding sessions are popular.
Monkey Island is one of the zoo's oldest and most iconic exhibits -- an open-air island surrounded by a moat where spider monkeys swing, climb, and play without cages or glass separating them from viewers. The transparency of the exhibit design is refreshing.
The Apes of Africa building houses gorillas and bonobos in spacious indoor habitats with viewing windows. The building is excellent for rainy or cold days. The aquatic & reptile center has freshwater fish, amphibians, and reptiles including a massive Komodo dragon.
Summer brings the splash pad (near the children's area), outdoor animal encounters, and full programming. Winter has reduced hours and some outdoor exhibits are closed, but indoor buildings remain open and Wild Lights (a holiday light display) draws crowds November through January.
The zoo has extensive picnic areas with tables and grills, making packed lunches easy. The property is flat and fully stroller-friendly with paved paths throughout. Parking is $14 in the main lot.

Best Time to Visit
Spring through fall for the fullest experience. Summer has all outdoor exhibits and the splash pad open. Weekday mornings are least crowded. The Wild Lights holiday event (Nov-Jan) is spectacular.
Wait Times
Most exhibits: no waits. Train ride: 5-15 min. Carousel: 5 min. Splash pad gets busy on hot summer afternoons.
Nearby Food
Multiple food stands inside the zoo ($10-15). For better options, Wauwatosa Village (10 min) has Le Reve Patisserie, North Avenue Grill, and Iron Grate BBQ. Mayfair Mall area has chain restaurants. For post-zoo custard, head to Kopp's (see separate listing).
Why Kids Love It
The zoo train circles the entire property through wooded areas -- kids spot animals from the train that you can't see from the walking paths. The giraffe feeding station puts kids face-to-face with a 16-foot animal. Monkey Island (one of the oldest exhibits, an open-air island of spider monkeys) is mesmerizing.
The splash pad near the children's area is a summer essential. The Apes of Africa building has gorillas and bonobos in impressive indoor habitats.
