About
The Venetian Pool in Coral Gables is one of the most unique swimming experiences in America -- an 820,000-gallon spring-fed pool carved from a coral rock quarry in 1924, surrounded by waterfalls, coral rock caves, and lush tropical landscaping.
What was once a rock quarry was transformed by Coral Gables founder George Merrick into a Venetian-inspired swimming lagoon that has been drawing families for a century. The pool features two waterfalls, a swim-through grotto carved into the coral rock, stone bridges, observation towers, and a sandy area for younger swimmers. The water is spring-fed and drained completely every night, refilled with fresh water from underground aquifers.
The pool is on the National Register of Historic Places and carries genuine historic cachet. Esther Williams performed aquatic shows here, and Johnny Weissmuller -- Hollywood's original Tarzan -- trained in these waters. The Mediterranean Revival architecture, with its loggias and towers, makes the setting feel transportive.
For families, the pool strikes a rare balance between beauty and function. The shallow end has a gradual entry suitable for kids who are beginning swimmers. The deep end (where jumping is allowed from designated areas) satisfies older kids. The grotto provides a sense of adventure -- swimming through a cave in crystal-clear water is genuinely thrilling for children.
Important: Children under 3 years old are not permitted in the pool (strictly enforced). The pool operates seasonally (generally April-October, with limited winter hours). Summer weekends reach capacity -- buying tickets online in advance is essential. Coral Gables residents receive significantly discounted rates.

Why Kids Love It
This is not a normal swimming pool. Carved out of a coral rock quarry in 1924, the Venetian Pool looks like something from a fantasy movie -- waterfalls cascading over coral rock formations, a grotto you can swim through, and stone bridges arching over crystal-clear spring water. Kids are mesmerized by the cave-like grotto and love jumping off the small platforms into the deep end.
The spring-fed water is drained and refilled every night, so it is always clean and clear. At 820,000 gallons, it is one of the largest freshwater pools in the country. The coral rock walls and lush tropical landscaping make it feel like swimming in a natural spring rather than a municipal pool.
Historically, this was a coral rock quarry that Coral Gables developer George Merrick transformed into a Venetian-inspired swimming lagoon. Esther Williams and Johnny Weissmuller (the original Tarzan) both swam here. Kids love hearing that Tarzan practiced his swimming in the same pool they are splashing in.
