About

Springs Preserve is the 180-acre nature and culture attraction that locals love and tourists overlook. Located just minutes from the Strip on the site of the original water source that gave Las Vegas its name (the springs that Spanish explorers found in 1829), it combines botanical gardens, nature trails, museums, and a fantastic splash pad into a full day of family activity.

The property feels like an oasis in the desert because it literally is one. Walking trails wind through desert demonstration gardens showcasing native plants, cacti, and water-wise landscaping. For kids, the botanical gardens become engaging with the free scavenger hunt sheet available at the front desk -- they search for specific plants, animal sculptures, and geological features throughout the grounds.

The Origen Museum is the indoor centerpiece, with interactive exhibits about the Mojave Desert ecosystem, water conservation, and the history of the Las Vegas valley. Kids can crawl through a flash flood simulation, pan for minerals, and explore a recreated underground spring. The exhibits are hands-on and genuinely educational without being preachy.

The seasonal butterfly habitat (typically March through November) is a highlight. A screened greenhouse houses hundreds of free-flying butterflies of dozens of species. Kids who wear bright colors and stand still find butterflies landing on their shoulders and hands -- a genuinely magical moment.

For younger kids, the splash pad is the main event, especially in summer. It features multiple water jets, dumping buckets, spray arches, and a zero-depth entry area safe for toddlers. The surrounding area has shaded seating for parents. A small train loops through the preserve grounds, narrated with information about the desert landscape.

Divine Cafe on-site serves better food than you'd expect from a museum cafe -- fresh salads, sandwiches, and kids' meals on a shaded patio with garden views. It is a pleasant lunch spot.

Springs Preserve is the kind of place locals bring their kids regularly. It lacks the flash of Strip attractions, but it delivers genuine engagement with the desert environment that surrounds Las Vegas, and the splash pad alone makes it worth the trip in summer months.

Plan Your Visit

Best Time to Visit

October through April for comfortable outdoor exploring. Summer mornings (open at 9 AM) before the heat intensifies. The botanical gardens are most colorful in spring. Weekdays are significantly less crowded than weekends.

Wait Times

Minimal waits. The splash pad can get busy on summer weekends. Train rides may have a 5-10 minute wait on peak days.

Nearby Food

Divine Cafe on-site serves sandwiches, salads, and kids' meals ($8-14) with a shaded patio overlooking the gardens. Nearby Palace Station has a food court. Chinatown (5 min drive on Spring Mountain Road) has excellent family-friendly restaurants including Kung Fu Thai & Chinese and District One.

Why Kids Love It

The splash pad is a lifesaver in summer -- multiple water features with zero-depth entry let toddlers through tweens cool off. The train ride loops through the desert landscape and kids wave at roadrunners and jackrabbits. The butterfly habitat (seasonal, spring-fall) lets kids stand still while butterflies land on them.

The desert demonstration garden has a scavenger hunt that turns a walk through cacti into a game.
