About
Shark Reef Aquarium at Mandalay Bay is one of the few attractions directly on the Las Vegas Strip that is genuinely designed for families. Housing over 2,000 animals in 1.3 million gallons of water, it focuses primarily on predators -- sharks, rays, piranha, crocodiles, and the star attraction, a massive Komodo dragon.
The highlight for most kids is the walk-through acrylic tunnel that passes through the main shark tank. Sharks, sawfish, green sea turtles, and giant rays swim directly overhead and on both sides. The sand tiger sharks with their ragged, toothy grins are particularly impressive up close.
The tunnel is long enough to linger without feeling rushed, and benches allow families to sit and watch the marine life parade above them.
The touch pool near the exit is the interactive component kids crave. Under staff supervision, kids can gently touch horseshoe crabs, small bamboo sharks, and cownose rays gliding through shallow water. Staff members are knowledgeable and patient, explaining the animals to curious kids.
Other notable exhibits include the jellyfish gallery (illuminated tanks with pulsing jellyfish in color-changing lights -- genuinely beautiful), the golden crocodile exhibit (a rare leucistic crocodile), piranhas, and a giant Pacific octopus.
Important expectation-setting: Shark Reef is smaller than major destination aquariums like Georgia Aquarium or Monterey Bay. It occupies roughly 95,000 square feet and most families complete the circuit in 60-90 minutes. At $29/adult and $23/child, the per-minute cost is higher than larger aquariums.
That said, the shark tunnel and touch pool deliver genuine wow moments, and as a fully air-conditioned indoor activity on the Strip, it fills an important niche for families dealing with Las Vegas heat.
The aquarium is located at the south end of Mandalay Bay, which means a long walk through the casino from the main entrance. Follow signs for Shark Reef -- the walk takes about 10 minutes. Strollers are welcome throughout.

Plan Your Visit
Best Time to Visit
Weekday mornings for the smallest crowds. Shark feeding times (check daily schedule) are the most exciting moments. Late evenings on Fridays and Saturdays are surprisingly quiet since most families have left.
Wait Times
5-15 minute line for tickets on weekends. Touch tank can have a 5 minute wait. The walk-through tunnel rarely has waits -- most people move through steadily.
Nearby Food
Mandalay Bay has 20+ restaurants ranging from fast food (Burger Bar, Noodle Shop) to upscale (Aureole, Lupo). The food court near the convention center is the most family-friendly and affordable option. Citizens Kitchen + Bar has a solid kids menu.
Why Kids Love It
Walking through the underwater tunnel with sharks swimming directly overhead is thrilling -- massive sawfish, sand tiger sharks, and rays glide just feet above your head. The touch pool lets kids handle horseshoe crabs, rays, and small sharks. The Komodo dragon exhibit features one of the largest lizards in captivity. The jellyfish displays with color-changing lights are mesmerizing for all ages.
