About

Fremont Street Experience is downtown Las Vegas's five-block pedestrian mall covered by the Viva Vision canopy, the world's largest single video screen. The screen stretches 1,500 feet long and 90 feet wide, playing massive light and sound shows every hour after dark. It is free, spectacular, and one of the most sensory-overwhelming experiences available to families in Las Vegas.

The key to visiting Fremont Street with kids is timing. Between 5-8 PM, the atmosphere is lively but family-appropriate. Light shows have started, neon signs glow, and street performers work the crowd.

After 9-10 PM, the scene shifts dramatically toward an adult party atmosphere -- more alcohol, louder music, and street performers whose acts can include inappropriate content for children. Families should plan to be in and out before 9 PM.

The light shows are the main draw. Each show runs about 6 minutes, playing on the overhead canopy with synchronized music blasting from speakers along the street. Kids crane their necks upward as the entire sky transforms into animations, music videos, and abstract light art. The shows repeat every hour, so you can watch multiple iterations if you want.

Street performers are everywhere -- living statues, breakdancers, musicians, magicians, and costumed characters. Quality varies wildly. Most expect tips ($2-5 is standard). The performers during family hours are generally more entertaining and less risque than the late-night crowd.

SlotZilla is a zip line that launches riders from a giant slot machine replica 77 feet above Fremont Street (lower level) or 114 feet above in a superhero-style prone position (upper level, called Zoomline). Kids must meet height requirements (lower: 50 inches, upper: 55 inches) and weight limits. At $39-59 per rider, it is expensive, but the experience of flying over the Fremont Street crowd is undeniably thrilling for older kids.

At the east end of Fremont Street, the Downtown Container Park offers a more intentionally family-friendly environment. Built from repurposed shipping containers, it houses shops, restaurants, a tree house playground, and a giant praying mantis sculpture that shoots real fire from its antennae at scheduled intervals after dark. It is worth the 5-minute walk from the main Fremont action.

Getting to Fremont from the Strip takes about 15 minutes by car or rideshare. Free parking is available at several downtown casinos with validation.

Plan Your Visit

Best Time to Visit

Go between 5-8 PM for the first light shows while the crowd is still family-friendly. After 9-10 PM the atmosphere shifts to a more adult party scene with street performers that can be inappropriate for kids. Weekend afternoons before dark are also fine for a quick walk-through.

Wait Times

No waits for walking and light shows. SlotZilla zip line can have 30-60 minute waits on weekend evenings. Restaurant waits vary.

Nearby Food

Dozens of options on Fremont Street. Heart Attack Grill is a spectacle. Pizza Rock has award-winning pizza. Oscar's Steakhouse in the Plaza is upscale but welcomes families. Downtown Container Park (east end) has Pinches Tacos and other casual spots. Mob Museum Speakeasy has a hidden bar parents enjoy (take turns with kids at Container Park).

Why Kids Love It

The Viva Vision canopy is the world's largest video screen -- 1,500 feet long, 90 feet wide, covering five blocks overhead. Light shows play every hour and the entire street erupts in synchronized music, lights, and video that is overwhelming in the best way. Street performers range from living statues to breakdancers to musicians.

The vintage neon signs and classic Vegas vibe feel like a movie set.

Pro Tips from Parents

  • Visit between 5-8 PM -- early enough for the first light shows, late enough for the neon glow, and before the adult party crowd arrives
  • The light shows run every hour on the hour starting at dusk -- arrive 5 minutes early for a good viewing spot
  • Walk all five blocks end to end -- the east end near the Container Park is more family-friendly and less chaotic than the west end
  • Downtown Container Park (east end of Fremont) has a playground, shops, and a fire-breathing praying mantis sculpture that activates at night
  • After 9-10 PM the street performers and crowd become increasingly adult-oriented -- this is when families should leave
