About
Cowabunga Bay is the Las Vegas area's dedicated family water park, located in Henderson about 20 minutes southeast of the Strip. Open seasonally from late May through early September (with some extended weekend dates), it provides the most effective relief from the brutal desert summer heat available to families.
The park features over 25 rides, slides, and attractions spread across several themed areas. The major thrill slides include Point Panic (a steep body slide), Surf Safari (multi-lane racing slides), and Breaker 1-9 (a funnel slide). Height requirements vary -- most major slides require 42-48 inches.
The wave pool is large and generates legitimate waves that older kids can body surf. The lazy river meanders through the park and is long enough for a genuinely relaxing float.
For younger children, the Cowabunga Kids Cove is a dedicated area with miniature slides, spray features, and shallow pools designed for kids under 6. It is separated from the main park, so parents can relax while little ones play without worrying about older kids barreling through. A separate splash pad area caters to toddlers.
Practical realities: Las Vegas summer temperatures exceed 110F regularly, and the concrete and metal surfaces at a water park amplify that heat. Water shoes are essential -- bare feet on hot pavement and metal stairs are painful. Sunscreen must be reapplied hourly because the combination of water, reflected sun, and altitude (Las Vegas is 2,000 feet above sea level, increasing UV exposure) creates aggressive burn conditions.
Shade is the most valuable commodity in the park. Covered chairs and cabanas ($150-300) sell out early. Arrive at opening to secure shaded seating. Without shade, managing a full day with young children becomes difficult by early afternoon.
The park does not allow outside food, so budget for park food prices ($10-18 per item for standard water park fare -- burgers, pizza, nachos, ice cream). A family of four should budget $60-80 for food on top of admission.
The best value strategy: buy twilight tickets (after 3 PM) for $25-30 per person. You get 3-4 hours of park time with somewhat reduced crowds, and the late afternoon sun is marginally more bearable. Season passes ($80-100) pay for themselves in 2 visits and are worthwhile for locals or families staying multiple weeks.

Best Time to Visit
Late May through early September (seasonal). Arrive at opening for the best chair selection and shortest slide waits. Weekdays are dramatically less crowded than weekends. Avoid holiday weekends (Memorial Day, July 4th, Labor Day) if possible -- capacity crowds.
Wait Times
Weekdays: 5-10 min for big slides. Weekends: 20-40 min for popular slides. Wave pool and lazy river have no waits. Kiddie area rarely has waits.
Nearby Food
Multiple food stands inside the park serving burgers, pizza, nachos, and ice cream ($10-18 per item). No outside food allowed. The Galleria at Sunset mall (adjacent) has a food court and chain restaurants for post-park meals. In-N-Out Burger is 5 minutes away.
Why Kids Love It
It is a full-scale water park in the desert where summer days hit 115F -- the relief of water slides and wave pools is visceral. The Cowabunga Kids Cove has scaled-down slides and splash features for little ones. The wave pool generates actual waves big enough for body surfing.
Wild Surf is a standing surf simulator that teens line up for. The lazy river is long enough to feel like a real float trip.
Pro Tips from Parents
- Arrive at opening -- get chairs in the shade (they go fast) and enjoy 30-45 minutes of short lines before crowds build
- Reapply sunscreen obsessively -- between the water washing it off and the desert sun, burns happen fast even with initial application
- The Cowabunga Kids Cove is excellent for under-6s -- small slides, splash features, and shallow water in a separate area from the big slides
- Twilight tickets (after 3 PM) are the best value -- cheaper tickets, slightly less crowded, and the late afternoon sun is more bearable
- Rent a cabana if you have a large group or young kids who need naps -- the shade, privacy, and included amenities are worth the splurge
