About
Every Friday night around 7:45pm, the Hilton Hawaiian Village sets off a fireworks show over the lagoon at the edge of Waikiki Beach. The whole thing lasts about 5 minutes, but it's one of those experiences that sticks with kids long after you fly home. Explosions over the Pacific, reflections bouncing off the water, warm sand under your feet — it doesn't get more Hawaii than this.
The best part? It's completely free. You don't need to be a Hilton guest or buy anything. Just walk to any stretch of Waikiki Beach facing the Hilton and you've got a front-row seat. We like Fort DeRussy Beach Park because there's more room to spread out with a blanket and kids can run around beforehand without crashing into other people's setups.
For the closest view, head to the beach right next to the Hilton lagoon. Get there by 7:15 on busy nights (holiday weekends especially) or you'll be standing behind three rows of people. The lagoon side is also calmer water if your kids want to splash around while you wait.
One thing to manage: it's short. Five minutes, maybe six. If you tell a 7-year-old you're going to a fireworks show, they're picturing a 20-minute Fourth of July extravaganza. Set the expectation that it's quick but cool, and pair it with a beach hangout or dinner nearby so the fireworks are the highlight of a bigger evening, not the whole plan.
The show runs year-round most Fridays, but it does get cancelled occasionally for high winds or private events. Call the Hilton front desk at (808) 949-4321 that afternoon if you want to confirm. We got burned once driving across town only to find out it was cancelled for a corporate thing.
After the show, the whole Waikiki strip is alive. Grab shave ice from one of the walk-up spots on Kalakaua Ave ($5-$8) or if the kids are hungry, Marukame Udon is a short walk away and does handmade bowls starting around $7. It's a perfect cap to a Friday night that cost you basically nothing.

Plan Your Visit
Best Time to Visit
Show starts at 7:45pm most Fridays — get your spot on the beach by 7:15 to grab sand space near the Hilton Hawaiian Village lagoon
Wait Times
No wait, but the best beach spots fill up 30+ minutes before showtime on busy weekends
Nearby Food
The Hilton Hawaiian Village has a handful of restaurants and a grab-and-go ABC Store is right across the street on Kalia Rd. For cheaper eats, Marukame Udon on Kuhio Ave is a 10-minute walk and kids love watching them make noodles through the glass — bowls start around $7.
Why Kids Love It
Fireworks over the ocean hit different than your typical 4th of July show. The explosions reflect off the water and the whole beach lights up — toddlers stare wide-eyed, older kids cheer with every boom. It's one of those rare things where a 2-year-old and a 14-year-old are equally into it.
Pro Tips from Parents
- Waikiki Beach near the Hilton lagoon has the best close-up view, but Fort DeRussy Beach Park gives you more space to spread out with kids
- Bring a blanket — the sand gets surprisingly cool after sunset
- The show runs about 5 minutes, so don't build it up as a long event for little kids or they'll be disappointed
- Check the Hilton Hawaiian Village website or call ahead — the show occasionally gets cancelled due to wind or special events
What to Bring
- Beach blanket or towel to sit on
- Light jacket — Waikiki gets breezy after dark
- Snacks and water since nearby food vendors jack up prices on Friday nights
Cost Info
Free Admission
Estimated Cost (Family of 4)
$0-$25 (breakdown: fireworks free, parking $6-$10 if you drive to Waikiki, optional shave ice ~$5-$8 from nearby vendors)
Tips to Save
- It's completely free from any public beach in Waikiki.
- Skip the restaurant "fireworks dinner" packages at the Hilton — you'll pay $60+/person for the same view you get standing on the sand.
- Walk or take the bus (TheBus fare is $3/adult, kids under 5 free) and you're looking at a $0 evening.
