About

Dinosaur Ridge sits right along the hogback in Morrison, about 20 minutes west of downtown Denver, and it's one of those places that genuinely delivers on the promise. You're not looking at replicas behind glass. Your kids are touching actual dinosaur footprints pressed into 100-million-year-old rock, right there on the trail.

The site runs along a 1. 5-mile stretch of exposed rock where both Jurassic and Cretaceous fossils are visible. You can walk it on your own for free or take a guided bus tour ($18/adult, $12/kid, free for ages 2 and under).

The bus takes about 45 minutes and stops at all the major sites — the Iguanodon tracksite, the bone quarry, the ripple marks. Guides are knowledgeable and keep it interesting for kids without dumbing it down.

Down at the Main Visitor Center, there's a small exhibit hall and two free dig areas where kids can sift for fossils and shark teeth. My kids spent almost as long at the dig tables as on the actual ridge. The gift shop is decent — real fossil kits, geodes you can crack open, dino toys that aren't all junk.

Stroller situation: the first 0.7 miles of trail is paved and manageable. After that it gets steep and rocky, so if you've got a toddler, the bus tour is the better call. Bathrooms and picnic tables are at the visitor center.

One thing to know — there's basically zero shade on the ridge. Summer afternoons get hot. Morning visits are smarter, especially June through August. The site's open 9am-5pm in summer, 9am-4pm the rest of the year.

If you want to stretch it into a half-day, Red Rocks Park is a 5-minute drive and the Trading Post trail is easy enough for kids. The combo of dinosaur tracks + Red Rocks amphitheater makes for a pretty unbeatable Morrison morning. Morrison Natural History Museum is also right nearby — the Dino Pass combo ticket saves $2/person and adds another 30-45 minutes of solid content.

Plan Your Visit

Best Time to Visit

Weekday mornings in summer (June-October) when the site's open until 5pm and bus tours run more frequently. Fall weekdays are great too — fewer crowds and cooler temps for walking the ridge.

Wait Times

Bus tours can have 15-30 min waits on summer weekends. Weekdays you'll usually hop right on.

Nearby Food

The visitor center sells basic snacks and drinks, but nothing substantial. Morrison has a few solid spots within 5 minutes — The Fort Restaurant is a local landmark (pricey but fun), or grab burgers at Morrison Inn right in town.

Why Kids Love It

Real dinosaur footprints pressed into actual rock along the trail — kids can touch 100-million-year-old tracks with their own hands. The free dig areas at the visitor center let them sift for fossils and shark teeth like a real paleontologist. And riding the open-air bus up the ridge feels like a legit expedition.

Pro Tips from Parents

  • Sit on the right side of the bus for the best views of the tracksite and Denver skyline
  • The first 0.7 miles of the trail is paved and flat — after that it gets steep and rocky, so plan accordingly with little ones
  • Bring cash or card for the gift shop — they've got solid dino toys and real fossil kits starting around $5
  • Combine with Red Rocks Park (5 min drive) for a full morning — the Trading Post trail there is easy and gorgeous

What to Bring

  • Sunscreen and hats — there's almost no shade on the ridge trail
  • Water bottles (no water fountains on the trail itself)
  • Comfortable walking shoes with grip if you're doing the full trail walk

Cost Info

Partially free — some areas or times are free

Tips to Save

  • Walking the ridge on your own is completely free — you'll see the same tracksite and bone quarry markers, just without the narration.
  • The Morrison Dino Pass bundles Dinosaur Ridge bus tour + Morrison Natural History Museum for $34/adult and $22/kid, saving $2/ticket.
  • Kids 2 and under are free on bus tours.
  • Library pass programs (like Arapahoe Libraries) sometimes offer free admission passes — check before you go.
