About
The Wilds of Africa is one of the Dallas Zoo's landmark sections — an African-themed zone featuring both walk-through habitats and a unique monorail tour that gives families a safari-style perspective on the zoo's African animal collection.
The monorail experience is what makes this section stand out. Departing from a dedicated station, the enclosed monorail glides through a series of open African habitats — passing within yards of giraffes, white rhinos, African painted dogs, and other species in outdoor enclosures. For young children especially, this is pure magic: you're riding through an environment with real wild animals close enough to photograph, without the physical demands of a long walking tour.
It's the closest thing to an African safari experience you'll find in North Texas.
Beyond the monorail, the Wilds of Africa walking section features multiple African habitats including savanna overlooks, the African painted dogs habitat, and the African forest ecosystem. The pathways are wide and stroller-accessible, and the shade coverage is reasonable compared to more exposed sections of the zoo.
Morning visits are strongly recommended: animals are visibly active, the temperature is manageable even in summer, and monorail wait times are shorter. By early afternoon in summer, animals retreat to shade and the monorail lines grow.
The monorail has a separate upcharge from regular admission — worth every dollar, especially if you have young kids who'd struggle with an extended walking tour. Budget a few extra dollars per person.
Combine Wilds of Africa with Giants of the Savanna for a comprehensive African wildlife experience that covers the Dallas Zoo's absolute best material.
