About

Lazy 5 Ranch is a 180-acre drive-through animal park in Mooresville, about 40 minutes north of Charlotte near Lake Norman. It's one of the most popular family day trips from the Charlotte area for a simple reason: where else does a giraffe stick its head in your car window?

The format is a 3. 5-mile one-way drive through the ranch's property. You roll down your windows, receive a map at the entrance, and navigate through paddocks and open ranges where over 750 animals from six continents roam — some in open areas, most in section fencing that vehicles drive through gate by gate.

The animals include giraffes, zebras, waterbuck, ankole cattle (the ones with enormous horns), ostrich, bison, Highland cattle, camels, and dozens of other species.

Buying feed buckets at the entrance is non-negotiable. Animals that approach cars without food are polite. Animals that approach a car with a bucket of feed are enthusiastic. Giraffes will stretch their full 6-foot necks into a car window for a handful of feed pellets. The experience is genuinely contact-level wildlife.

The wagon ride (included in admission) is a pulled wagon that loops through a second section of the ranch with additional viewing angles and species. It runs on a continuous schedule and adds about 45 minutes to the visit.

Mid-morning on weekdays in spring and fall is ideal — animals are active, temperatures are comfortable, and the line to enter is short. Avoid summer midday; a drive-through safari in a hot car with animals that aren't moving isn't the same experience.

Why Kids Love It

Lazy 5 Ranch is a 180-acre drive-through animal park about 40 minutes north of Charlotte near Mooresville, with over 750 animals from six continents. The experience is distinctly hands-on: animals approach your car window directly — giraffes stretch their necks into the window, ostrich lean in for feed, and zebu cattle crowd the car for snacks. Young kids are almost always stunned when a giraffe appears in the car window.

The wagon ride adds a second viewing loop through a different section.

Pro Tips from Parents

  • Roll down your windows before entering — animals approach the car and you want full access. Keep small kids in the center of the back seat when the big animals approach.
  • Buy extra feed buckets inside the entrance — $3-5 each and worth it. Animals are noticeably more engaged with cars that have food.
  • Drive slowly — the experience is proportional to how patient you are. Rushing through misses half the animal encounters.

What to Bring

  • Your own car (drive-through format)
  • Camera or phone for window-level giraffe shots
  • Wet wipes (animal feed and slobber are real)
  • Water and snacks for the drive
