About
Latta Nature Preserve is a 1,341-acre county-owned natural area along the Mountain Island Lake shoreline in Huntersville, about 15 miles north of Uptown Charlotte. It's free to access, well-maintained, and packed with the kind of genuine wildlife encounters that are hard to find this close to a major city.
The trail system covers about 16 miles across multiple loops — from easy, flat lakeside paths and boardwalk sections through freshwater marsh to longer forested trails with modest elevation change. The marsh boardwalk is the standout: elevated walkways pass through a freshwater wetland where wood ducks nest, great blue herons stalk the shallows, and red-winged blackbirds fill the air from spring through summer. Early morning visits regularly produce river otter sightings.
Latta is also home to one of the most accessible equestrian programs in the Charlotte area. The Latta Equestrian Center offers guided trail rides for families — minimum age 7, moderate cost, and reservations required. For kids who have never ridden, a guided trail ride through the forest and along the lakeshore is a memorable experience.
Mountain Island Lake, which borders the preserve, is a drinking water reservoir — no swimming, but canoe and kayak rentals are available at the boat landing area from spring through fall. The lake is calm and the coves near the preserve are beautiful for paddling.
Picnic facilities are available near the nature center and boat launch. The preserve staff sometimes run naturalist programs and guided walks — check the Mecklenburg County Parks schedule.
