Brevard Zoo

Brevard Zoo is a community-supported zoo in Viera/Melbourne (30 minutes south of Cocoa Beach) that punches well above its weight with unique experiences, well-designed habitats, and a manageable scale that families with young children appreciate. The standout feature -- kayaking through the zoo's African habitat -- is available nowhere else in the country.

The Expedition Africa kayak tour puts families in kayaks on a waterway that winds through the Africa section of the zoo. You paddle past giraffes, ostriches, antelope, and other African species at water level, with no barriers between you and the animals (they are separated by the water itself). The experience is peaceful, immersive, and unlike any other zoo visit.

Giraffe feeding from an elevated platform is another highlight. Kids hand-feed lettuce to giraffes that lean down to eat from their palms. The close interaction with these gentle giants -- feeling their rough tongues, looking into their enormous brown eyes -- is a top family memory. The feeding experience costs $7 extra per person.

The zoo covers 75 acres with well-designed habitats organized by region: Expedition Africa, Wild Florida (alligators, panthers, red wolves, black bears), Lands of Change: Australia & South America, and La Selva (rainforest aviary). The Wild Florida section is particularly relevant for Space Coast visitors, showcasing the wildlife that inhabits the surrounding Merritt Island and Indian River ecosystems.

The Paws On play area includes a splash pad for cooling off in Florida's heat, plus play structures and interactive elements for young children. A train ride circles through animal habitats. Both are available for small additional fees.

Brevard Zoo is manageable in 3-5 hours, making it a natural half-day activity. Combine with a Cocoa Beach morning or afternoon for a full Space Coast day. The zoo's community-supported mission means your admission supports local conservation and education programs.
