About
I-Ride Adventures specializes in stand-up paddleboarding (SUP) tours in the calm waters of Cancun's lagoon system. For families, SUP offers something that most Cancun water activities don't — a quiet, low-adrenaline way to explore the natural mangrove environment without engines, crowds, or noise.
The Nichupte Lagoon is the primary paddling location, and it's perfect for families. The water is calm, shallow in many areas, and protected from ocean swells. This makes it dramatically easier and less intimidating than ocean paddleboarding. Even complete beginners can stand up and paddle within 10-15 minutes of instruction.
Tours start with a land-based lesson covering stance, paddling technique, and how to fall safely (spoiler: everyone falls at least once). Then the group heads into the mangrove channels where the pace is gentle and the scenery is spectacular. Guides point out wildlife — herons, iguanas, small fish, and occasionally crocodiles in the distance — which keeps kids focused and engaged.
Kids as young as 6 can participate, either on their own small board or sharing a larger board with a parent. The boards used for beginners are wide and stable, designed to minimize wobbling. Life jackets are provided and required for kids.
The physical effort is moderate. Adults find it a decent workout, but kids are typically light enough that the paddling feels easy. The main challenge for younger kids is maintaining focus and not getting distracted by splashing and playing. Guides are used to families and keep the pace relaxed.
Paddling through the mangroves has an almost magical quality. The narrow channels create a tunnel effect with roots and branches overhead, and the water is so shallow in places that you can see the bottom clearly. This intimate nature experience stands in sharp contrast to the motorboat tours that blast through the same lagoon system.
The experience runs 2-3 hours total including instruction. Wear a swimsuit, apply waterproof sunscreen before you go, and accept that you will get wet. The lagoon water is warm and safe for swimming.

Why Kids Love It
Standing up on a paddleboard for the first time gives kids an incredible sense of accomplishment. Gliding through the calm lagoon water while spotting fish and birds below feels like a secret nature expedition. Even kids who fall in love the warm, shallow water and turn it into a swimming break.
Pro Tips from Parents
- Book the earliest morning session — the lagoon is calmest before 9 AM
- Younger kids (6-8) do best sharing a board with a parent rather than paddling solo
- Apply sunscreen before arrival — you can't reapply once you're on the water without risking your balance
- Wear a rash guard or quick-dry shirt to prevent sunburn on your back
- Don't bring anything you can't afford to drop in the water
What to Bring
