About
Medano Beach — known locally as Playa El Medano — is the heart and soul of Cabo San Lucas beach life, and it's the only major swimmable beach in town. While most Cabo beaches have dangerous surf and rip currents, Medano sits on a protected bay with gentle waves that make it safe for kids of all ages to wade, splash, and swim.
The beach stretches about a mile along the bay, lined with restaurants, bars, hotels, and a constant buzz of activity. The western end near Mango Deck and Billygan's tends to be the party zone with loud music and a college-spring-break vibe, so families with young kids should head to the eastern end of the beach where it's mellower. You'll find a mix of locals and tourists, beach vendors selling everything from silver jewelry to fresh fruit, and a parade of boats heading out to El Arco.
Water sports are huge here. You can rent jet skis, paddleboards, kayaks, and banana boats right from operators on the sand. Glass-bottom boat tours and water taxis to Lover's Beach depart from the waterline. For younger kids, the shallow, bathwater-warm water near shore is basically a giant natural wading pool.
Beach chair and umbrella rentals run about $10-15 each, often bundled with a minimum food/drink purchase at a beachfront restaurant. If you're on a budget, bring your own setup and claim a spot on the free sections of sand between the restaurant zones. Restrooms are available at the beachfront restaurants — just buy a drink and they'll let you use the facilities.
Medano Beach is walkable from downtown Cabo and the marina area. Street parking is limited, so many families walk from their hotel or take a short taxi ride. The beach is at its best in the morning when the water is calmest and the sand hasn't heated up to scorching temperatures yet.

Plan Your Visit
Best Time to Visit
Morning before 11 AM for calmer water and cooler sand. Weekdays are less crowded than weekends.
Nearby Food
The Office on the Beach serves great tacos and seafood with your feet in the sand. Baja Brewing Company is nearby for craft beer and kid-friendly burgers. Mango Deck is the party spot but has a family-friendly lunch menu too.
Why Kids Love It
Medano Beach is the ultimate family beach in Cabo because the water is calm, warm, and shallow enough for little ones to splash around safely. Unlike most Cabo beaches where the waves are too rough for kids, Medano sits on a protected bay with gentle surf that rarely gets above knee height near shore. Kids can spend hours building sandcastles on the wide, soft sand beach, chasing each other through the shallows, and watching the constant parade of boats heading to El Arco.
Older kids and teens will love the water sports — jet skis, banana boat rides, paddleboards, and kayaks are all available right on the beach. The beach vendors who walk by selling mango on a stick and fresh coconut water are a highlight for many kids. And when everyone gets hungry, you can literally walk from the sand into a beachfront restaurant without even putting shoes on.
Pro Tips from Parents
- Arrive before 10 AM to snag a good spot — the beach fills up fast by midday especially near the restaurant areas
- The east end of the beach (toward the old cannery) is quieter and more family-friendly than the party scene near Mango Deck
- Negotiate beach chair and umbrella prices — vendors will often drop the price if you commit to buying food or drinks
- Water shoes are helpful for kids since there can be small rocks near the waterline in some spots
- Book water taxi trips to El Arco and Lover's Beach directly from beach vendors — prices are negotiable
What to Bring
- Reef-safe sunscreen and reapply often — the Cabo sun is intense
- Water shoes for the rocky patches near shore
- Cash in pesos for vendors and tips (some take USD but at poor rates)
- Sand toys for younger kids — the sand here is perfect for building
- Rash guards for kids to avoid sunburn during long beach days
