About
Fernbank Museum of Natural History is one of those Atlanta spots that actually delivers for families. It's not a quick stop — plan for 3-4 hours minimum because there's a lot of ground to cover between the indoor exhibits, NatureQuest, WildWoods, and the forest.
The dinosaur gallery is the obvious headliner. The Argentinosaurus skeleton is genuinely massive — we're talking one of the largest dinosaurs ever discovered, and seeing it in person hits different than pictures. Kids stand there with their mouths open.
The rest of the natural history exhibits are solid too, covering Georgia ecosystems, ocean life, and geological history with enough interactives to keep fidgety hands busy.
NatureQuest is where younger kids lose their minds. It's a huge indoor nature playground — virtual river splashing, a climbable treehouse, a cave with bats to find, a fossil dig pit, and live animal habitats with juvenile alligators and snakes behind glass. It's climate controlled, which matters in Atlanta summers.
Fair warning: this area gets slammed on weekend afternoons, so hit it first if you can.
Outside, WildWoods is the newer addition and it's great for burning energy. Stroller-accessible paths, climbing structures, and open space for running around. Fernbank Forest is the wilder option — 75 acres of old-growth forest with mulched trails and some rocky inclines.
It's beautiful but skip the stroller here. Bring a carrier for little ones. The forest closes at 4:30pm, so don't leave it for the end of your visit.
General admission includes everything — all exhibits, WildWoods, the forest, and a Giant Screen Theater film. That's a solid deal considering some museums nickel-and-dime you for the theater. Weekday tickets run $25.95/adult and $23.95/child (3-12), with weekend prices bumping up a couple bucks. Parking is free but limited on busy weekends.
The on-site café has standard museum food — pizza, sandwiches, chicken tenders for kids — at around $10-12 per person. Not amazing, not terrible. If you want to eat before or after, Ponce de Leon Ave has tons of family-friendly spots within a few minutes' drive.
One thing to know: the museum is stroller-friendly inside but the single elevator gets backed up. They actually ask families to consider leaving strollers at home to keep elevator access open for people with mobility needs. Nursing rooms and changing tables are available throughout.

Plan Your Visit
Best Time to Visit
Weekday mornings right at 10am opening — smaller crowds and lower ticket prices than weekends. Avoid holiday weekends and spring break.
Wait Times
Minimal wait most days. Weekend afternoons can get crowded at NatureQuest. Giant Screen Theater fills up — grab those seats early.
Nearby Food
Fernbank Café inside the museum has sandwiches, salads, and kid-friendly stuff like pizza and chicken tenders — budget ~$10-12 per person. If you want something better, The Midway Pub and Flying Biscuit Café are both within a 5-minute drive on Ponce.
Why Kids Love It
The dinosaur gallery has massive skeletons that tower over you — including one of the largest dinosaurs ever discovered. NatureQuest lets kids splash through virtual rivers, climb a treehouse, dig for fossils, and peek at live juvenile alligators and snakes. WildWoods outside is basically a nature playground where they can run wild on 75 acres.
Pro Tips from Parents
- Hit NatureQuest first thing — it's the most popular kids' area and gets packed by noon on weekends
- Fernbank Forest trails close at 4:30pm (30 min before the museum), so don't save the outdoor stuff for last
- Leave the stroller for WildWoods but bring a carrier for Fernbank Forest — the mulched paths and rocky terrain won't work with wheels
- The Giant Screen Theater film is included with admission — check the schedule when you arrive and grab seats early
What to Bring
- Baby carrier or Ergo for Fernbank Forest trails (strollers can't handle the terrain)
- Layers — you'll go between AC inside and Georgia heat outside in WildWoods
- Closed-toe shoes for the forest trails
