About
The Tropical Rain Forest Zone at Woodland Park Zoo is one of those exhibits that earns its square footage by being genuinely immersive rather than just holding animals in a warm box.
You enter through a climate lock and immediately feel the temperature and humidity shift — it's maintained at tropical conditions year-round, which makes it a particularly good choice on Seattle's gray rainy days when the outdoor exhibits are less appealing. The environment inside is a recreated tropical rainforest with dense planting at multiple canopy levels: ground cover, mid-story shrubs, and tall emergent trees.
The animals inside aren't separated behind glass in the conventional zoo sense — they coexist in the space. Free-flying tropical birds move through the canopy overhead. Giant tree frogs cling to leaves at eye level (or above).
Reptiles sit motionless against bark, camouflaged well enough that spotting them becomes a legitimate challenge. My 7-year-old turned it into a game: how many animals can you count that you didn't initially see?
The zone's relatively compact footprint means it's thoroughly explorable in 45-60 minutes as part of a larger zoo visit. It functions as a great weather backup — when morning fog burns off and it turns out to be a decent day, you do the outdoor exhibits; when it's raining steadily, the tropical zone becomes the centerpiece.
Practical notes: this is included in Woodland Park Zoo general admission — no separate ticket. Strollers are manageable but the denser vegetation sections work better without. The zone tends to be less crowded than the zoo's signature exhibits, making it a good early or late stop in your zoo day.

Why Kids Love It
The Tropical Rain Forest Zone at Woodland Park Zoo is a warm, humid greenhouse environment home to free-flying birds, giant tree frogs, and reptiles that coexist in a recreated rainforest canopy. Kids love that you walk through a living rainforest — some of the birds fly at head height, and the thick vegetation makes it feel genuinely immersive rather than like a standard zoo exhibit. Spotting the camouflaged animals hidden in the foliage becomes a game.
Pro Tips from Parents
- Look up — many of the birds perch or fly at canopy level and are easy to miss if you're looking straight ahead
- The zone is kept at tropical temperatures — a welcome warmth on Seattle rainy days
- Move slowly and let your eyes adjust to the filtered light — the camouflaged reptiles become visible once you know what to look for
- Combine with the neighboring exhibits for a full zoo loop
- Strollers can navigate the zone but it's more nimble on foot
What to Bring
