About

The Seattle Great Wheel is a 175-foot Ferris wheel on Pier 57, extending over Elliott Bay on the Seattle waterfront. It has become one of the city's most recognizable landmarks since opening in 2012. For families, it provides a quick, memorable experience with stunning views that captures the essence of Seattle's waterfront setting.

The ride experience is notably generous. Each ticket includes three full rotations, totaling approximately 12-15 minutes -- significantly longer than most tourist Ferris wheels that offer a single rotation. The fully enclosed, climate-controlled gondolas mean the ride operates in rain (which matters in Seattle).

Each gondola seats 6-8 people comfortably, with large windows providing panoramic views in all directions.

The views from the top are spectacular on clear days. Looking west, Elliott Bay stretches to the Olympic Mountains. Looking east, the Seattle skyline rises with the Space Needle prominent. Looking south on very clear days, Mount Rainier appears as a massive snow-covered peak dominating the horizon. Below, Washington State Ferries cross the Sound, providing constant movement for kids to watch.

The waterfront location makes the Great Wheel part of a larger family outing rather than a standalone attraction. The newly completed Seattle Waterfront Park stretches along the water with landscaped promenades, public art installations, and children's play areas. Pike Place Market is a 5-minute walk uphill.

The Seattle Aquarium is adjacent. Families can easily build a half-day waterfront itinerary connecting these attractions on foot.

At night, the wheel's 500,000 LED lights create colorful animated patterns visible from across the city. The light shows change seasonally and for special events. Riding at night adds a different dimension -- the city lights and water reflections replace the daytime mountain views.

Plan Your Visit

Best Time to Visit

Sunset rides are the most scenic -- the wheel faces west over Elliott Bay and the Olympic Mountains. Weekday afternoons have the shortest lines. Clear days offer the best views. The wheel operates in rain (gondolas are enclosed) but views are limited on foggy days.

Wait Times

Weekdays: 5-15 min. Weekend afternoons: 15-30 min. Summer weekends: up to 45 min. Buy tickets online in advance to skip the ticket booth line.

Nearby Food

Waterfront seafood restaurants along Alaskan Way: Ivar's Fish Bar (fish and chips, $10-15), Elliott's Oyster House (sit-down, $$). Pike Place Market (5 min walk uphill) has extensive food options. Miner's Landing (adjacent) has restaurants and an arcade. The Crab Pot on the pier serves the Seafeast (seafood dumped on your table, fun for kids).

Why Kids Love It

Rising 175 feet over Elliott Bay, the fully enclosed, climate-controlled gondolas provide panoramic views of the Seattle skyline, Mount Rainier, the Olympic Mountains, and the Puget Sound ferries crossing below. Kids press their faces to the glass pointing out landmarks as the wheel slowly rotates. At night, the wheel's LED lights create colorful patterns visible from across the city.

The ride lasts three full rotations (about 12-15 minutes), which is significantly longer than most Ferris wheels. This gives kids time to relax, take photos, and absorb the view from every angle rather than the rushed single rotation common at amusement parks.

The waterfront location means the ride is part of a larger family experience. The Seattle Waterfront Park stretches along the water with public art, viewpoints, and play areas. Kids can watch ferries depart, spot sea lions on the dock pilings, and wave at passing boats.

Pro Tips from Parents

  • Ride at sunset for the most spectacular views -- the wheel faces west over Elliott Bay with the Olympic Mountains silhouetted
  • Buy tickets online before arriving to skip the ticket booth line, especially on summer weekends
  • Gondolas are fully enclosed and climate-controlled -- the ride operates in rain, making it a viable activity even on gray Seattle days
  • Combine with Pike Place Market (5 min walk uphill) and the Seattle Waterfront Park for a half-day waterfront itinerary
  • The VIP gondola (glass floor, leather seats, champagne for adults) is fun but not necessary -- standard gondolas have the same views

What to Bring
