About

The Pacific Science Center at Seattle Center has been the city's premier hands-on science museum since it was built for the 1962 World's Fair. Its distinctive white gothic arches remain a Seattle Center landmark. For families, the combination of interactive science exhibits, a tropical butterfly house, IMAX theater, and planetarium provides a full day of engaging, educational entertainment -- and as an indoor attraction, it is invaluable during Seattle's frequent rainy days.

The Tropical Butterfly House is the emotional highlight for most families. A climate-controlled greenhouse maintains the warm, humid conditions that hundreds of tropical butterflies require. Walking through the enclosure, butterflies from Central America, Southeast Asia, and Africa flutter around visitors, landing on clothing and skin.

The contrast between stepping out of gray Seattle rain into a warm, flower-filled greenhouse surrounded by butterflies is genuinely magical. Docents stationed inside help visitors identify species and explain butterfly biology.

The hands-on exhibit halls span multiple buildings connected by covered walkways. Science exhibits rotate but consistently include earthquake simulations (kids build structures and shake them on a seismic table), water physics displays, light and optics experiments, and engineering challenges. The dinosaur exhibit features animatronic models that move, breathe, and roar with impressive realism.

For very young visitors, the Just for Tots area provides age-appropriate sensory play for children under 5.

The IMAX theater houses one of the largest screens in the Pacific Northwest, and the dome format wraps the image around and above the audience. Nature documentaries and space films shown in this format are immersive in a way that home screens cannot match. The planetarium offers star shows and astronomical presentations. Both require separate tickets beyond general admission.

The evening laser shows (typically Friday and Saturday nights) are a distinctly different experience. The planetarium dome becomes a canvas for laser light choreographed to classic rock albums -- Pink Floyd's Dark Side of the Moon, Led Zeppelin's catalog, and other selections vary by night. The combination of darkness, vivid laser patterns, and loud rock music creates a concert-like atmosphere.

These shows appeal to tweens, teens, and parents far more than to young children.

Plan Your Visit

Best Time to Visit

Weekday mornings for lightest crowds. The Tropical Butterfly House is less crowded right at opening. School field trip season (spring and fall) means weekday mornings can be busy with groups. Summer weekends are peak -- arrive at opening. Perfect rainy-day activity.

Wait Times

Butterfly House: 5-15 min on weekends. IMAX shows: buy tickets at arrival for preferred time. Laser shows: popular evening shows may sell out. Most exhibits flow freely.

Nearby Food

Small cafe on-site with sandwiches and snacks ($8-14). The Armory food court at Seattle Center (5 min walk) has 10+ vendors including MOD Pizza, Skillet, and Bigfoot BBQ ($8-15). Lower Queen Anne restaurants (5 min walk south) include Pagliacci Pizza and Toulouse Petit.

Why Kids Love It

The Tropical Butterfly House is pure enchantment. Walking into a warm, humid greenhouse filled with hundreds of free-flying butterflies from around the world is a sensory shift from the gray Seattle weather outside. Butterflies land on clothing, hair, and outstretched hands. Kids stand frozen with a butterfly perched on their finger, afraid to breathe and break the spell.

The hands-on science exhibits are designed for maximum interaction. Kids build structures and test them on an earthquake table, launch air rockets, experiment with light and color mixing, and manipulate water channels. The dinosaur exhibit features full-scale animatronic dinosaurs that move and roar -- realistic enough to thrill but not terrify most children.

The IMAX theater and planetarium shows add cinematic spectacle. The IMAX dome screen wraps around and above the audience, creating an immersive experience for nature and space documentaries. The evening laser shows set to classic rock (Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin) are a unique experience for tweens and teens -- flashing lasers synchronized to music in a dark theater is mesmerizing.

Pro Tips from Parents

  • Hit the Butterfly House first thing -- it is the most popular exhibit and gets crowded as the day progresses
  • Buy IMAX tickets at the front desk when you arrive to secure your preferred showtime
  • The toddler play area (Just for Tots) is specifically designed for ages 0-5 with soft, safe exploration spaces
  • Evening laser shows (Fri-Sat) are a unique experience for ages 8+ -- check the music selection (classic rock bands vary) and book in advance
  • Combine with MoPOP (across the courtyard) and Space Needle (adjacent) for a full Seattle Center day
