About
OdySea Aquarium is the largest aquarium in the Southwest, and its location in the middle of the Sonoran Desert makes it a wonderfully unexpected family destination. Opened in 2016 in the OdySea in the Desert entertainment complex in north Scottsdale, the facility houses over 6,000 animals across 2 million gallons of water. For families, it is one of the best indoor attractions in the Phoenix metro area -- fully air-conditioned and engaging enough for a solid 2-3 hour visit.
The aquarium experience begins on the upper level and spirals downward through themed galleries. The star attraction is the Voyager ride, a slow-moving boat ride through a glass tunnel submerged in the main ocean tank. Sharks, sea turtles, giant rays, and schools of tropical fish swim directly overhead and on all sides.
It is dramatic and immersive, especially for young children seeing large marine animals for the first time. The ride takes about 8 minutes and lines can reach 20-25 minutes on busy weekends -- head there first.
The touch experiences are consistently the family favorites. The stingray touch tank ($5 extra) lets kids reach into shallow water and gently pet cownose rays gliding past. The texture of a stingray wing -- velvety smooth on top, slightly sandpapery on the bottom -- surprises and delights kids.
A separate touch pool features horseshoe crabs, sea urchins, and starfish with staff on hand to answer questions and help hesitant kids feel comfortable.
The penguin encounter ($30/person, advance booking required) takes small groups behind the scenes to meet African penguins at close range. A handler introduces individual penguins by name and shares facts about the species. Kids can sometimes touch a penguin under handler supervision. This is a premium experience that sells out quickly -- book online as soon as you confirm your visit date.
Other notable exhibits include the octopus den, the jellyfish gallery with mesmerizing backlit tanks, the freshwater river section featuring piranhas and giant catfish, and SeaTREK, an underwater walking experience where guests wear dive helmets and walk along the ocean floor among the fish (separate fee, ages 10+).
The aquarium is located in the same complex as Butterfly Wonderland, and combo tickets offering both attractions at a discount are available online. Many families do both in a single visit, spending about 2 hours at the aquarium and 1-1.5 hours at Butterfly Wonderland, for a 3-4 hour indoor outing.
Logistically, the aquarium is fully stroller accessible with elevators between levels. The path through the exhibits is one-directional, which keeps flow smooth but means you cannot easily backtrack to a favorite spot. Family restrooms with changing stations are available throughout.
A small cafeteria inside serves pizza, hot dogs, and snacks ($8-12); for better food, the OdySea complex has sit-down restaurants or drive 5 minutes to the Pavilions shopping center.
Parking is free in the large lot surrounding the complex. The aquarium sits along the Loop 101 freeway at Via de Ventura, easily accessible from anywhere in the Scottsdale-Phoenix metro area (typically 15-25 minutes from most Scottsdale resorts).
