About
The Arizona Science Center is downtown Phoenix's premier family attraction and the best place to take kids when the desert heat makes outdoor activities impossible. Spread across four floors with over 300 hands-on exhibits, a planetarium, and a five-story IMAX theater, it delivers a full day of engagement for curious kids of all ages.
The exhibit galleries are organized by theme and collectively cover physics, biology, engineering, earth science, and human perception. The Forces of Nature gallery is the crowd favorite, featuring a hurricane-force wind simulator where visitors stand in a glass chamber and experience 78 mph gusts, and a massive lever system that demonstrates mechanical advantage by letting a child lift an actual car. The engineering and design galleries include ramp tracks where kids build and race vehicles, bridge-building challenges, and a wind tunnel for testing paper airplane designs.
The CREATE gallery on the ground floor is specifically designed for children ages 0-4 and is one of the best toddler spaces in the Phoenix metro area. Soft play structures, water tables, oversized building blocks, and sensory stations keep very young children entertained while older siblings explore the upper floors. The space is clean, safe, and staffed by helpful museum educators.
The Dorrance Planetarium seats 200 under a 60-foot dome and runs shows throughout the day on topics from solar system exploration to constellation identification. Shows are about 25 minutes and suitable for ages 4 and up (the dark theater and loud audio can startle very young children). The five-story IMAX theater screens nature documentaries and science films in stunning resolution.
Both are add-on experiences at $7 per person each.
For families visiting Phoenix during summer (June-September), the Arizona Science Center is an essential itinerary item. When outdoor temperatures routinely surpass 110F, this air-conditioned museum provides 3-4 hours of engagement without heat exposure. It pairs well with a morning zoo visit -- hit the Phoenix Zoo at opening, leave by 11 AM, and spend the hot afternoon here.
The museum is fully stroller accessible with elevators between all floors. Family restrooms with changing tables are on every level. A small cafe on the ground floor serves sandwiches, pizza, and kids' meals ($8-12), or walk to Heritage Square next door for Pizzeria Bianco, one of the most acclaimed pizza restaurants in America (expect a wait, but the pizza is extraordinary).
Parking is available in the Heritage Square garage ($10-15/day) directly adjacent to the museum, or try metered street parking on surrounding blocks for less. The Valley Metro light rail stops two blocks away at Washington/3rd Street station.
Allow 3-4 hours for a thorough visit including one show. The museum is closed Mondays. For the lightest crowds, visit Tuesday through Thursday during the school year. Weekend mornings fill up but rarely feel oppressively crowded.

Why Kids Love It
The giant lever in the Forces of Nature gallery lets kids literally lift a car with their own strength. The hurricane simulator blasts 78 mph winds at you while you stand inside. Building and racing cars on the ramp tracks in the engineering gallery turns every kid into a mini engineer.
Pro Tips from Parents
- Perfect summer activity when outdoor temps exceed 110F -- fully air-conditioned and engaging for hours
- The Dorrance Planetarium shows are excellent and different from IMAX -- if choosing one, planetarium is better for younger kids
- The CREATE gallery for ages 0-4 is on the ground floor and specifically designed for toddler hands and attention spans
- Combine with Heritage Square (next door) for an outdoor break and the historic Rosson House
- Parking in the Heritage Square garage is $10-15; street meter parking on surrounding blocks can be cheaper
