About
Roaring Camp Railroads operates two distinct railroads from its historic property in the redwood-forested hills above Santa Cruz. The Redwood Forest Steam Train runs the Bear Mountain Loop on a narrow-gauge track through some of the most spectacular old-growth coast redwood groves in California. The Santa Cruz Beach Train runs a standard-gauge railroad down through the San Lorenzo River gorge to the Santa Cruz Boardwalk.
The steam locomotives are the stars of the show — Roaring Camp is one of the very few places in the United States where families can ride behind a genuine working steam engine through a natural landscape. The locomotives date from the late 1800s and early 1900s and are maintained in operational condition. Watching the fireman stoke the boiler and hearing the engine's whistle echo through the redwood canyon is an experience with almost no modern equivalent.
The Bear Mountain Loop takes approximately 75 minutes round trip and climbs through groves of trees that predate European contact with North America. Several of the coastal redwoods along the route are estimated to be 1,500-2,000 years old. The train stops at the summit for photos before descending on the opposite side of the mountain, giving riders views from multiple angles.
The camp property itself is worth exploring before or after the train ride. The 1880s-era general store sells period-appropriate goods alongside modern snacks and souvenirs. The covered BBQ area with picnic tables is ideal for families who pack their own lunch. Occasionally the camp hosts special events including Civil War reenactments, chili cook-offs, and themed holiday trains.
For families with train-obsessed children, Roaring Camp is a once-in-a-childhood destination. For families who just want a beautiful outdoor experience, the combination of steam power, old-growth redwoods, and fresh mountain air creates a memory that outlasts any theme park ride.

Why Kids Love It
Roaring Camp operates genuine working steam locomotives — not replicas — on the steepest narrow-gauge railroad grade in North America. The Bear Mountain Loop climbs 1,800 feet through old-growth redwood groves so dense the canopy blocks the sky overhead. Kids hang out of open-air cars (with parent supervision) and breathe in actual steam locomotive smoke while the engine labors up the grade, wheels occasionally slipping on the steep sections.
It feels like stepping inside a history book.
The redwoods themselves are extraordinary. Several of the trees along the route are over 1,000 years old and tower 200+ feet above the tracks. Kids who are used to city parks experience a genuine sense of scale shift — looking up and being unable to see the tops of trees is a feeling they do not forget.
The forest floor is carpeted in redwood sorrel and ferns, and the light filtering through the canopy creates an otherworldly green glow that makes every photo look like a movie set.
The Felton camp itself is an 1880s-era working ranch property with a general store, a covered picnic area, and old ranch buildings to explore before or after the train ride. The Beach Train (summer only) runs all the way from Felton to the Santa Cruz Boardwalk through the San Lorenzo River gorge, making it possible to do a one-way train adventure and return by taxi or rideshare — a genuine point-to-point railroad experience that kids consider an all-day adventure.
Pro Tips from Parents
- Sit on the right side of the train heading up for the best views of the redwood canyons.
- The top of Bear Mountain has a short hiking path to an overlook — get off at the summit stop if the schedule allows.
- December holiday trains (Santa Cruz to the North Pole) are magical but book out 4-6 weeks early — set a calendar reminder.
- Bring layers — the forest is significantly cooler than the town, often 10-15 degrees colder even in summer.
- The general store sells real old-fashioned candy by the pound, which buys enormous goodwill with kids on the ride back.
What to Bring
- Jacket or sweatshirt (forest is cool)
- Camera or phone with good zoom for wildlife
- Snacks and water for the picnic area
- Cash for the general store
- Comfortable walking shoes
