About
The San Francisco Zoo sits on 100 acres along the city's western oceanfront, offering a more relaxed and affordable family outing than the big-name attractions downtown. It may not have the flashy exhibits of the San Diego or Bronx Zoos, but for families with young children, its manageable size, uncrowded paths, and excellent children's area make it a low-stress winner.
The zoo is home to over 2,000 exotic, endangered, and rescued animals across naturalistic habitats. Highlights include the grizzly bear exhibit (two rescued bears with a waterfall pool they love to splash in), the African savanna section with giraffes, zebras, and kudu, the primate center with gorillas and lemurs, and the penguin island colony of Magellanic penguins. The big cat habitats house lions, snow leopards, and tigers, though like most zoo cats, they spend a good amount of time napping.
The Fisher Family Children's Zoo, included with admission, is a standout for kids under 8. This dedicated area features a walk-through barnyard where kids can pet and feed goats, sheep, and donkeys. The insect zoo displays enormous beetles, stick insects, and a live beehive behind glass.
Nature trails wind through native California plant gardens, and there is a creek play area during warmer months.
The Little Puffer miniature steam train is the single most beloved attraction for toddlers and preschoolers. This scaled-down train runs on a loop through a section of the zoo, and the seven-dollar ride elicits sheer delight from small children. It operates daily, weather permitting, and rarely has long waits. The historic Dentzel carousel ($5/ride) near the entrance is another timeless hit.
Layout-wise, the zoo is flat and easy to navigate with strollers. Paths are wide and paved. A full circuit of the zoo at a toddler pace takes about 2-3 hours; if you linger at the children's zoo and ride the train, plan for 3-4 hours. The zoo provides a free paper map at the entrance, or download the app for a digital version with GPS.
One thing to know: the zoo's location right on the Pacific coast means it is frequently foggy and cold, even when downtown San Francisco is sunny. Summer months (June-August) are paradoxically the foggiest. Bring warm layers regardless of the forecast. On the plus side, the cool temperatures mean animals are often more active here than at inland zoos.
Food options on-site include the Leaping Lemur Cafe with burgers, pizza, and sandwiches ($8-14), plus scattered snack carts. There are excellent picnic areas with tables throughout the zoo -- packing your own lunch is the best value play. After your visit, cross the Great Highway to Ocean Beach for a free bonus activity: kids can play in the sand and watch surfers, though the water is too cold and rough for swimming.
The zoo sees its highest attendance on sunny weekend afternoons and holiday weekends but never reaches the crushing crowds of downtown attractions. Weekday mornings are ideal -- you may have entire exhibits to yourself.

Best Time to Visit
Weekday mornings when animals are most active. The zoo is on the coast and often foggy in summer -- spring and fall offer the best weather. Animals are more active on cooler days.
Wait Times
Rarely crowded except holiday weekends. Little Puffer train may have 5-10 min wait. Feeding times draw small crowds at specific exhibits.
Nearby Food
Zoo cafe has burgers, pizza, and sandwiches ($8-14). Java Beach Cafe across Great Highway has coffee and breakfast items. The Sunset District along Noriega Street (5 min drive) has excellent Chinese restaurants and Andytown Coffee Roasters.
Why Kids Love It
The Little Puffer miniature steam train loops through the zoo and kids beg to ride it again and again. The Fisher Family Children's Zoo area lets kids get close to farm animals and even feed goats. Grizzly bears playing in their waterfall habitat never gets old.
Pro Tips from Parents
- Start at the back of the zoo and work toward the entrance -- most visitors go left from the entrance, so the back is quieter early on
- The Little Puffer train ($7/ride) departs from near the playground -- toddlers consider this the highlight
- Check the daily feeding schedule at the entrance for penguin, grizzly bear, and big cat feeding times
- The zoo is at the ocean and noticeably colder than downtown SF -- bring jackets even on sunny days
- Combine with a walk on Ocean Beach right across the street for a bonus free activity
