About
The San Diego Zoo Safari Park (formerly the Wild Animal Park) is the San Diego Zoo's sprawling 1,800-acre sibling located 35 minutes north in Escondido. While the Zoo in Balboa Park excels at traditional exhibits and walkability, the Safari Park delivers an immersive, adventure-oriented wildlife experience that feels remarkably like an African safari.
The Africa Tram is the Safari Park's signature experience and is included with standard admission. This 25-minute open-air tram ride carries passengers through a 900-acre savanna where giraffes, Southern white rhinos, Cape buffalo, greater kudu, and various antelope species roam in mixed herds across a landscape designed to mimic the African plains. There are no fences between the tram path and many of the animals — a giraffe may walk within 10 feet of your vehicle, or a rhino might be grazing just off the trail.
For kids accustomed to seeing animals behind glass, the openness of this experience is revelatory. A knowledgeable guide narrates the entire ride, pointing out individual animals and sharing conservation stories.
Beyond the tram, the Safari Park offers several premium adventure experiences. The Flightline Safari ($70/person, ages 10+, 130-pound minimum) is a zip line that carries riders at up to 40 mph across two-thirds of a mile directly over the animal enclosures. Looking down to see rhinos and giraffes below while soaring at height is a once-in-a-lifetime thrill.
The Cart Safari ($95/person) puts families in an open-air vehicle that drives into the savanna for a closer, guided encounter.
The walking exhibits are excellent in their own right. Tiger Trail recreates an Asian forest with Sumatran tigers, Malaysian tapirs, and fishing cats. Walkabout Australia features free-roaming kangaroos and wallabies on a path where kids can approach the animals (gently — they are wild).
The Condor Ridge exhibit supports the California condor recovery program and houses these magnificent birds in a dramatic clifftop setting. The Frequent Flyers bird show is outstanding — trainers cue hawks, owls, and condors to swoop low over the audience, and the Andean condor's 10-foot wingspan passing overhead is genuinely breathtaking.
For young children, Lorikeet Landing is a must. For $6, kids receive a cup of nectar and enter an aviary filled with hundreds of colorful lorikeets. The birds land on arms, shoulders, and heads to drink from the cups, creating delightful photos and giggly kids.
The Robert's Wild Ride balloon — a tethered helium balloon that rises 400 feet above the park — gives aerial views of the entire Safari Park and surrounding valley for $6/person.
Practically, the Safari Park requires more driving (35 minutes from downtown San Diego, 45 minutes from Mission Beach) and is more spread out than the Zoo. The terrain is hilly and the park is hot in summer — temperatures inland in Escondido regularly exceed 90 degrees from June through September, significantly warmer than the coastal zoo. Bring water, sunscreen, hats, and consider a morning visit to avoid peak afternoon heat.
The Safari Park is generally better for kids ages 4 and up. Younger toddlers can enjoy the tram and lorikeets, but the spread-out layout, heat, and walking distances make it challenging with very young children. For families debating between the Zoo and the Safari Park, the Zoo is better for ages under 5 (compact, stroller-friendly, more shade), while the Safari Park is better for ages 6+ (adventure elements, safari experience, zip line).

Wait Times
15-30 min for Africa Tram; 10-20 min for Flightline zip line
Nearby Food
Inside the park, the Savanna Cool Zone has decent BBQ and salads ($12-16). The Watering Hole bar near the Africa viewing area serves drinks for parents. Outside, Escondido's Grand Ave has Vinz Wine Bar & Kitchen and Hacienda de Vega for good family-friendly dining within 15 minutes.
Why Kids Love It
The Safari Park feels like visiting Africa without leaving San Diego. The Africa Tram carries families through a vast open-air savanna where giraffes, rhinos, antelope, and Cape buffalo roam freely — no fences between the animals and the sweeping landscape. Kids gasp when a giraffe walks past at eye level.
The Flightline Safari zip line sends riders soaring over the animal enclosures at 40 mph. The Frequent Flyers bird show features hawks and condors swooping over the audience's heads. And the Lorikeet Landing aviary lets kids hand-feed colorful parakeets.
