About
This Is The Place Heritage Park is a 450-acre living history park at the mouth of Emigration Canyon that brings Utah's pioneer history to life through hands-on experiences. Named for the words attributed to Brigham Young upon seeing the Salt Lake valley in 1847, the park recreates a pioneer-era village with authentic buildings, costumed interpreters, and activities that let kids experience 19th-century life.
The village consists of dozens of historic buildings -- some original, some recreated -- including a schoolhouse, general store, blacksmith shop, weaver's cabin, and log homes. During full programming periods (late spring through early fall), costumed interpreters demonstrate pioneer-era crafts and skills. Kids can try their hand at butter-churning, candle-dipping, weaving on a loom, and other activities.
The blacksmith shop is a perennial favorite -- watching a smith hammer glowing iron into horseshoes and tools is mesmerizing.
The miniature train ride loops through the park grounds, passing through meadows with mountain views. It is included in admission and kids can ride as many times as they want. Pony rides are also included -- a surprisingly generous offering since most similar parks charge extra for animal rides. The petting zoo area has goats, chickens, pigs, and other farm animals that kids can touch and feed.
Gold panning stations let kids sift through dirt and water to find small flecks of gold (seeded). The one-room schoolhouse recreates the experience of pioneer-era education. The general store sells penny candy and old-fashioned toys.
The park is most engaging for ages 3-10. Older kids and teens may find the pioneer activities less exciting unless they have a genuine interest in history. The park's programming varies by season -- summer has the most interpreters, demonstrations, and activities. Winter visits have reduced hours and limited programming.
Located at the mouth of Emigration Canyon adjacent to Hogle Zoo, the park can be combined with a zoo visit for a full day. The monument at the canyon mouth -- a massive statue of Brigham Young and other pioneers -- is worth a quick stop for its historical significance and mountain views.

Why Kids Love It
It is a full pioneer village where kids ride ponies, take a miniature train through the grounds, pet farm animals, pan for gold, and watch blacksmiths hammer hot iron. Costumed interpreters demonstrate pioneer crafts -- weaving, candle-making, butter-churning -- and let kids try them. The village has a schoolhouse, general store, and log cabins that kids can enter and explore.
It makes Utah history tangible rather than abstract.
