About

Liberty Park is Salt Lake City's 80-acre urban green heart -- the Central Park equivalent for a city that takes its parks seriously. Located in the Liberty Wells neighborhood, it has been the city's premier gathering space since 1882 and contains everything a family needs for a free afternoon.

The splash pad on the north end of the park is one of the best in the city. Multiple water features -- ground-level geysers, arcing sprayers, and a water tunnel -- activate on hot days and provide hours of entertainment for kids of all ages. The surrounding area has benches and shade trees for supervising parents.

The playground is large and modern, with separate equipment areas for different age groups. Climbing structures, slides, monkey bars, and swings are spread across a mulched area under mature trees. The equipment is well-maintained and the shade from the surrounding trees keeps the metal components from becoming dangerously hot in summer.

The duck pond on the park's east side is a simple pleasure that younger kids never tire of. Ducks, geese, and pond turtles inhabit the water, and kids can observe them from the shore. (The city asks that you use appropriate duck food rather than bread, which can be harmful to waterfowl.)

The Saturday Downtown Farmers Market (June through October) sets up in and around the park, transforming it into a community festival. Local farmers sell produce, ranchers offer meats and cheeses, artisans sell crafts, and food vendors serve prepared meals. Live music fills the air. The atmosphere is vibrant, diverse, and deeply family-friendly.

The park's 80 acres include walking and biking paths, tennis courts, a large open meadow for picnics and games, and a horseshoe pit. Tracy Aviary (separately ticketed, see its own listing) occupies a section of the park. The mature trees -- some over 100 years old -- provide extensive shade and create a canopy that makes the park feel more like a forest than an urban space.

Liberty Park is the kind of attraction that doesn't make the tourist brochures but defines the quality of life for local families. It is free, beautiful, well-maintained, and central to Salt Lake City's identity as a livable, family-friendly city.

Plan Your Visit

Best Time to Visit

Year-round. Summer for splash pad and full programming. Saturday mornings for the farmers market (June-October). Spring and fall have the best weather. The park is SLC's green heart -- locals use it daily.

Wait Times

No waits. The splash pad can get crowded on hot summer afternoons. Playground equipment is rarely all occupied.

Nearby Food

Food trucks gather at the park on summer weekends. The 9th & 9th neighborhood (east side of park) has Dolcetti Gelato, Publik Coffee, and East Liberty Tap House. The 900 South corridor has Laziz Kitchen (Middle Eastern) and Pie Hole (pizza). Saturday farmers market has prepared food vendors.

Why Kids Love It

The splash pad is huge and creative with multiple water features -- geysers, sprayers, and a water tunnel. The playground has modern equipment with climbing structures, slides, and swings for multiple age groups. The duck pond has ducks and turtles that kids can observe from the shore.

The park is 80 acres of open space with massive old trees, making it feel like a forest inside a city. Saturday farmers markets have live music and free samples.
