About

The steps of the Philadelphia Museum of Art became famous when Sylvester Stallone sprinted up them in the 1976 film Rocky, and 50 years later, people are still running up the 72 stone steps and raising their fists at the top. It's a cliche, it's touristy, and it's genuinely fun — especially with kids.

The steps face southeast, looking down the Benjamin Franklin Parkway (modeled after the Champs-Elysees) toward City Hall. The view from the top is spectacular and the sense of accomplishment after climbing is real, even if you're 4 years old. The Rocky statue — a bronze sculpture of Stallone in boxing stance — sits at the base of the steps on the right side.

There's usually a short line to take photos with it.

The Museum of Art itself is one of the great art museums in the world, with 240,000 works spanning 2,000 years. For families, the highlights include: the arms and armor gallery (real medieval armor, swords, and weapons), the period rooms (fully reconstructed rooms from different eras and cultures, including a Japanese tea house and a medieval stone cloister), and the Impressionist galleries (Monet, Renoir, Cezanne — recognizable even to kids who don't care about art).

The economics work in families' favor: kids under 12 are free. Pay-what-you-wish is available on first Sundays and Friday evenings. And the steps and statue outside are always free. A family can do the full Rocky experience — steps, statue, view — in 30 minutes for $0, or extend into a museum visit for modest cost.

Why Kids Love It

Running up the Rocky Steps is a Philadelphia rite of passage, and kids don't even need to know who Rocky is to enjoy sprinting up 72 stone steps and throwing their arms in the air at the top. The view from the top of the steps — looking down the Benjamin Franklin Parkway toward City Hall — is one of the great urban vistas in America. Everyone does the Rocky pose. Everyone.

The Rocky statue at the base of the steps (bottom right) is the other must-do. The bronze statue of Sylvester Stallone in his boxing pose has a perpetual line of people waiting to take photos with it, but the line moves fast. Kids who've seen the movie (or clips) love it. Kids who haven't still enjoy punching the air next to a big bronze man.

If you actually go inside the museum (kids under 12 free!), the arms and armor gallery is the kid winner — real medieval suits of armor, swords, and weapons displayed in dramatic fashion. The museum also has excellent European painting, Asian art, and a stunning collection of period rooms. But for most families with kids under 10, the steps and statue are the main event.

Pro Tips from Parents

  • Go early morning (before 9 AM) for nearly empty steps and the best photo opportunities — by midday it's crowded
  • The Rocky statue is at the BOTTOM of the steps (right side when facing up) — many people look for it at the top
  • Kids under 12 are free inside the museum, making it actually affordable for families
  • The arms and armor gallery (2nd floor) is the most kid-engaging section of the museum interior
  • Friday evening pay-what-you-wish is the best way to test whether your kids are ready for an art museum

What to Bring

  • Camera (mandatory for the Rocky pose)
  • Water bottle (72 steps in summer heat is real exercise)
  • Comfortable shoes
