About
Gatorland has been an Orlando institution since 1949, long before Disney even broke ground. Billing itself as the 'Alligator Capital of the World,' this 110-acre wildlife preserve and theme park offers a distinctly Floridian experience that stands in refreshing contrast to the polished mega-parks on International Drive.
The park is home to thousands of American alligators and crocodiles, including rare leucistic (white) alligators that are among the most photographed animals in Florida. The main breeding marsh, viewable from a multi-level observation tower, gives visitors a perspective on what Florida's natural landscape looked like before development — dozens of large alligators basking on banks and floating in dark water, with herons, egrets, and anhingas perched in the surrounding cypress trees.
The live shows are Gatorland's biggest draw. The Gator Jumparoo is a must-see: trainers dangle whole chickens from a wire above a pond, and massive 12-14 foot alligators launch themselves vertically out of the water to grab the food. The power and speed is genuinely shocking, and kids sit wide-eyed throughout.
The Gator Wrestlin' show demonstrates traditional gator handling techniques, and the Up Close Encounters show brings out various reptiles, birds, and mammals for audience interaction.
For hands-on experiences, the baby gator photo opportunity lets kids (and parents) hold a juvenile alligator while a photographer captures the moment. The free-flight aviary is an underrated gem — a screened walkway through a habitat filled with budgies, lorikeets, and other tropical birds. For $2-3, kids can buy seed sticks and have birds land on their hands and shoulders.
Young children find this absolutely magical.
The Screamin' Gator Zip Line is Gatorland's premium add-on experience and is outstanding for adventurous families. The course features seven zip lines, some spanning over 1,000 feet, that carry riders directly over alligator breeding marshes and the Cuban crocodile exhibit. It is among the most unique zip line experiences in the country.
Riders must be at least 7 years old and weigh between 50-275 pounds. At $70-80 per person, it is a splurge but a memorable one.
Gatorland works best as a half-day activity (3-4 hours). The relatively affordable admission, low crowds, and authentic Florida atmosphere make it an excellent complement to a Disney or Universal day. It is especially good for families who want their kids to experience something beyond manufactured theme park entertainment.
The park is not fancy — picnic tables, gravel paths, and hand-painted signs give it a retro roadside attraction charm — and that is exactly what makes it special.

Why Kids Love It
Gatorland is Old Florida at its best — thousands of alligators and crocodiles in a natural swamp setting. Kids can hold baby alligators for photos, watch the jaw-dropping Gator Jumparoo show where 12-foot gators leap out of the water for food, and walk the free-flight aviary where tropical birds land on their arms. The Screamin' Gator Zip Line sends thrill-seekers soaring over alligator breeding ponds.
It feels like a real adventure, not a manufactured theme park experience.
