About
Milwaukee's Historic Third Ward is a former warehouse district that has transformed into the city's most vibrant walking neighborhood. Located between downtown and the lakefront, it combines the Milwaukee Public Market (a European-style food hall), independent shops, art galleries, the Riverwalk, and some of the city's best restaurants into a compact, walkable area that engages families for hours.
The Milwaukee Public Market is the neighborhood's centerpiece and Milwaukee's answer to Pike Place or Reading Terminal. Over 20 vendors sell prepared foods, fresh seafood, artisan cheese, baked goods, spices, and specialty groceries. St.
Paul Fish Company serves some of the best fried fish and raw oysters in the city. West Allis Cheese & Sausage Shoppe has Wisconsin cheese curds (a must-try). C.
Adam's Bakery and Beans offers pastries and coffee. The format works perfectly for families -- each person chooses a different vendor, and you reconvene at the communal seating.
Beyond the market, the Third Ward's streets are lined with converted warehouses housing boutiques, bookstores, art galleries, and restaurants. The architecture -- exposed brick, timber beams, large industrial windows -- gives the neighborhood character and atmosphere. Walking and browsing is pleasant and free.
The Riverwalk follows the Milwaukee River through the neighborhood with public art installations, benches, and views of the river and bridges. In summer, outdoor dining patios along the Riverwalk create a festive atmosphere. Boat and kayak traffic on the river adds visual interest.
Lakeshore State Park, a short walk east, is Wisconsin's only urban state park. It occupies a man-made island in the harbor with walking trails, wildflower plantings, and Lake Michigan views -- a pocket of nature steps from the urban neighborhood.
Purple Door Ice Cream, a local artisan ice cream shop in the Third Ward, makes small-batch flavors using Wisconsin dairy. It is the perfect end to a Third Ward visit.
