About

Betty Brinn Children's Museum is Milwaukee's dedicated early childhood museum, designed specifically for children ages 1-8. Located on the lakefront near the Milwaukee Art Museum, it provides the kind of play-based learning environment that engages young children for hours.

The museum's exhibits are organized around imaginative play and STEM exploration. A miniature city allows kids to role-play as grocery store workers, construction workers, doctors, and chefs with realistic props, uniforms, and settings. Kids fill shopping carts, scan items at the checkout, hammer nails at the building site, and wear scrubs in the medical clinic.

The role-play is open-ended -- kids create their own narratives.

The water play area is consistently the most popular exhibit. Kids manipulate dams, channels, pumps, and water wheels, directing water flow and building structures. It teaches basic engineering and physics through the universal appeal of splashing. Smocks are provided but a change of clothes is advisable.

The toddler zone is an enclosed area specifically designed for children under 3. Soft climbing structures, sensory tables with different textures, cause-and-effect toys, and a calming space provide age-appropriate stimulation without the overwhelming energy of older kids in the main galleries.

STEM labs offer rotating building challenges -- constructing bridges, towers, and vehicles with real materials under the guidance of museum staff. The challenges change regularly, providing novelty on repeat visits.

The museum is compact -- 2-3 hours is typical -- and ideally suited to its target age range. Parents with kids 9+ should consider the Milwaukee Public Museum or Discovery World instead. The location adjacent to the Milwaukee Art Museum creates an opportunity for parents to take turns -- one supervises at Betty Brinn while the other enjoys the art museum.
