About
Runyon Canyon Park is a 160-acre park in the Hollywood Hills that offers one of the most accessible hiking experiences in Los Angeles. For families, it provides a genuine nature experience with Hollywood skyline views, all within the city limits and at zero cost. The key question parents ask -- can my kids do it? -- depends on age and which trail you choose.
The park has two main entrances: Fuller Avenue at the bottom (easier access, street parking) and Mulholland Drive at the top. From Fuller Avenue, two routes diverge: a paved road (right fork) that climbs gradually on a maintained fire road, and a steeper dirt trail (left fork). The paved road is the family-friendly choice.
The first major viewpoint is approximately 15-20 minutes up the paved road. This overlook provides panoramic views of Hollywood, downtown LA, the Griffith Observatory, and on clear days the Pacific Ocean. For families with younger children, this makes an excellent turnaround point -- the round trip takes about 40 minutes.
Older kids can continue to the summit (45-60 minutes from the bottom) for 360-degree views.
The trail has virtually no shade on the upper sections, making timing critical. In summer, the exposed hillside can exceed 95 degrees by late morning. Early morning hikes (before 9 AM) are essential during warm months. Winter and spring offer the most comfortable temperatures and clearest views.
Runyon is one of LA's most popular off-leash dog areas, and families encounter dozens of dogs on every visit. For dog-loving kids, this is a feature. No water, restrooms, or facilities exist on the trail -- bring everything you need.

Best Time to Visit
Early morning (7-9 AM) before heat builds, especially in summer. Weekday mornings are quieter. Winter mornings after rain offer clearest views. Avoid midday in summer -- there is virtually no shade on the upper trails.
Wait Times
No waits. Parking on Fuller Ave fills by 9 AM on weekends -- arrive early or park on side streets.
Nearby Food
No food on the trail. Post-hike: Greenblatt's Deli on Sunset (classic pastrami), Stout Burgers, and Larchmont Village (10 min drive) has Salt & Straw ice cream and Go Get Em Tiger coffee.
Why Kids Love It
The reward-to-effort ratio is exceptional. Within 15-20 minutes of hiking from the Fuller Avenue entrance, kids reach a viewpoint overlooking all of Hollywood with the city skyline, the Hollywood Sign, and on clear days the Pacific Ocean visible. The sense of accomplishment from climbing to a vista point motivates even reluctant hikers.
Dogs are everywhere and off-leash -- Runyon is one of LA's most popular dog parks as well as a hiking trail. Kids who love dogs are thrilled to encounter dozens of friendly pups of every breed bounding through the canyon.
The trail offers encounters with lizards, hawks circling overhead, and wildflowers in spring that connect kids to nature within the heart of the city.
Pro Tips from Parents
- Take the paved road (right fork from Fuller Ave entrance) for the easiest path with kids -- the dirt trail on the left is steeper
- Bring more water than you think -- zero water sources on the trail and the exposed hillside gets very hot
- The first major viewpoint is only 15-20 min from the entrance -- turn around here with young kids for a satisfying short hike
- Morning before 9 AM is essential in summer -- temperatures on the exposed trail can exceed 95F by midday with no shade
- Park on residential streets near Fuller Ave (free) rather than driving up to Mulholland
