About
Truckee River rafting is Lake Tahoe's most relaxing family activity -- a 5-mile float down the river that flows out of Lake Tahoe through Tahoe City and into the forest downstream. The trip takes about 2 hours, covers gentle Class I-II water (small riffles and mini-rapids, nothing dangerous), and passes through some of the prettiest river scenery in the Sierra Nevada.
Truckee River Rafting is the primary outfitter, operating from a riverside location in Tahoe City. They provide multi-person rafts, paddles, life jackets, and the critical return shuttle. You launch from near the Lake Tahoe outlet, float downstream through town and into forested canyon, and exit at River Ranch Lodge about 5 miles downstream. A shuttle bus brings you back to your car.
The float is genuinely relaxing. The current does most of the work -- you paddle occasionally to navigate around rocks or position the raft, but mostly you drift. The water is crystal-clear (this is Lake Tahoe's outflow), cold (50-60°F), and surrounded by pine forest and granite.
Small rapids add just enough excitement to keep kids engaged without creating real risk. Life jackets are required for everyone.
The experience is ideal for families with kids ages 5 and up. Younger children are not allowed due to the cold water and safety considerations. Older kids and teens often jump out of the raft to swim in calm sections (with life jackets on). The river is shallow enough in many sections to stand.
Practical notes: the water is cold. Quick-dry clothing is essential, and wetsuit rentals or neoprene shirts help smaller kids stay comfortable. Afternoons are warmest. Apply sunscreen before launching -- you are on the water for 2 hours with sun reflection. A waterproof bag for phones and snacks is important. The outfitter handles everything else.

Why Kids Love It
Floating down the Truckee River on a raft is a lazy, sun-soaked adventure through pine forest and mountain scenery. The river flows gently from Lake Tahoe through Tahoe City and downstream, with just enough current to keep you moving without effort. Small rapids (Class I-II) add splashes of excitement without real danger.
Kids trail their hands in the cold, clear water, spot fish, and splash each other.
The 5-mile float takes about 2 hours and passes through a mix of forest, meadow, and the backyards of cabins along the river. It is the most relaxed activity at Lake Tahoe -- no hiking, no driving, just floating and enjoying the mountain scenery.
The outfitter provides everything: raft, paddles, life jackets, and a shuttle back to your car. You just show up and float.

- Afternoon floats are warmest -- the river runs through sunny stretches that warm up by 1-2 PM
