About

The Heavenly Gondola is the most accessible way to experience Lake Tahoe from above. Rising 2,500 vertical feet from the base at South Lake Tahoe to an observation deck at 9,123 feet, the gondola provides a 12-minute ride through forest, across granite ridges, and above the tree line to a panoramic viewpoint that showcases the full majesty of Lake Tahoe and the Sierra Nevada.

The gondola itself is a smooth, quiet ride in enclosed glass cabins that seat up to 8 passengers. The ascent reveals Lake Tahoe unfolding below -- from a sliver of blue through the trees to the full 22-mile-long, 12-mile-wide lake stretching to the distant mountains. Glass floor panels in some cabins add to the experience. Kids press against the windows as the forest canopy drops away.

The observation deck at the top is the payoff. A purpose-built viewing platform offers 360-degree views: Lake Tahoe in its entirety (the second-deepest lake in the US), the Sierra Crest with its 10,000+ foot peaks, Desolation Wilderness, and on clear days, the Nevada desert to the east. Coin-operated telescopes let kids spot specific beaches, boats, and landmarks.

In summer, the mountain-top area adds family activities: an aerial adventure course (ropes, bridges, zip lines), rock climbing wall, and guided mountain biking trails. These are separate tickets. Cafe Blue at the observation deck serves lunch and drinks with views.

The Heavenly Gondola launches from Heavenly Village in South Lake Tahoe, a pedestrian shopping and dining area. Families often combine the gondola with shopping, dining, and the village atmosphere. In winter, the gondola is the primary access point for Heavenly Mountain Resort's skiing terrain -- one of Tahoe's largest resorts.

Best Time to Visit

Summer (June-September) for sightseeing. Clear days are essential for views. Winter for skiing access. Mid-morning avoids the initial rush. The observation deck at 9,123 feet offers panoramic views.

Wait Times

15-30 minutes for the gondola on summer weekends. Weekdays: 5-10 minutes. The ride itself is 12 minutes each way. Lines are longer during peak summer and holiday weekends.

Nearby Food

Cafe Blue at the observation deck (casual dining with views). Tamarack Lodge mid-station has a restaurant. At the base: Heavenly Village has Cold Water Brewery, Base Camp Pizza, and California Burger Co. South Lake Tahoe's main strip has dozens of restaurants.

Why Kids Love It

Rising 2,500 vertical feet in a glass-enclosed gondola cabin over forests, granite ridges, and eventually above the tree line is thrilling for kids. The gondola glides quietly (not a roller coaster) but the height and views create genuine excitement. Through the glass floor panels, kids watch the mountain drop away below.

The observation deck at 9,123 feet offers a 360-degree panorama -- Lake Tahoe's entire 22-mile expanse spreads below in impossible blue, the Sierra Nevada peaks stretch to the horizon, and on clear days you can see into Nevada's high desert. Kids love the coin-operated telescopes for spotting boats, beaches, and distant landmarks.

In summer, the mountain-top area includes an adventure park with a rope course, zip line, and climbing wall. In winter, the gondola is the access point for one of Tahoe's largest ski resorts.

Pro Tips from Parents

  • Buy tickets online in advance for 20-30% savings over walk-up prices
  • The ride is 12 minutes each way -- the gondola cabins seat 8 and you often share with other visitors
  • The observation deck at 9,123 feet has the best 360-degree view of Lake Tahoe available without hiking
  • Bring layers -- the temperature at the top is 15-20°F cooler than at the base
  • Clear days are essential -- if it is cloudy, the views are obscured and the experience loses its magic

What to Bring

  • layers (cold at the top)
  • sunglasses
  • sunscreen
  • camera
  • snacks
  • water
