About

Fanny Bridge is one of Lake Tahoe's quirkiest and most beloved free attractions. The bridge spans the Truckee River at its outflow from Lake Tahoe in Tahoe City, and the name comes from the universal behavior of visitors: everyone leans over the railing to look at the fish below, presenting a row of backsides to passing traffic.

The attraction is the trout. Enormous rainbow and brown trout -- many 2-3 feet long -- congregate in the crystal-clear water below the dam where the Truckee River exits Lake Tahoe. The water is so clear that every fish is visible in detail, hovering in the current, occasionally darting for food, and swimming in lazy circles.

For kids accustomed to murky ponds or aquariums, seeing wild trout this large and this clearly is genuinely exciting.

The fish are protected at this location (no fishing allowed near the dam), which is why they are so abundant and so large. They have been a Tahoe City attraction for generations. A new pedestrian bridge completed in 2018 provides a wider, safer viewing platform separated from vehicle traffic.

Fanny Bridge is a 15-30 minute stop, not a half-day activity. It pairs perfectly with other Tahoe City attractions: Commons Beach (5-minute walk) for swimming and playground time, Tahoe City shops and restaurants (2-minute walk), or the lakefront bike path that extends along the west shore. The Bridgetender Tavern & Grill sits right at the bridge and serves burgers and casual fare with river views.

Every first-time Tahoe visitor should stop at Fanny Bridge. It is free, takes 15 minutes, and gives families a uniquely Tahoe experience that kids remember.

Why Kids Love It

Fanny Bridge is named because everyone who stops on the bridge bends over the railing to look at the giant trout below -- so all you see from a distance is a row of fannies. The trout in the Truckee River outflow from Lake Tahoe are enormous -- 2-3 feet long -- and clearly visible in the crystal-clear water. Kids are mesmerized watching dozens of huge fish hovering in the current.

It is a simple attraction -- look at big fish from a bridge -- but it captivates kids for 15-30 minutes. The trout are protected here (no fishing allowed at the dam), so they are abundant and unafraid, swimming lazily in the current. The clarity of the water makes it feel like looking into a giant aquarium.

Fanny Bridge is a perfect quick stop when driving through Tahoe City, or the start of a walk to Commons Beach, the Tahoe City shops, or the lakefront bike path.
