About

Camp Richardson Resort is Lake Tahoe's most beloved family destination -- a historic lakefront property on the south shore that combines beach, water sports, bike trails, dining, and classic summer-camp atmosphere. Operating since 1925, it feels like stepping into a Tahoe that predates the casinos and high-rise hotels.

The beach is the centerpiece. A long stretch of sandy shore on the south side of Lake Tahoe with gradual entry into the water, views of the surrounding mountains, and tall pines providing shade along the edges. The beach is free to access (parking fee applies), and families spread out for full-day stays.

Water sport rentals launch right from the beach. Kayaks, paddleboards, canoes, and pedal boats are available by the hour. Paddling from Camp Richardson along the shoreline toward Emerald Bay is one of the best on-water experiences at Tahoe -- calm water, stunning views, and opportunities to explore small coves and beaches accessible only by water.

The bike path running through Camp Richardson extends along the lake shore toward Emerald Bay and Fallen Leaf Lake. It is mostly flat, paved, and shaded by pines -- one of the best family bike rides in the Sierra Nevada. Bike rentals (adult, child, trailer, and tandem) are available on-site.

The Beacon Bar & Grill is Camp Richardson's on-site restaurant, serving burgers, fish tacos, and casual American fare with tables on a lakefront deck. The Rum Runner cocktail is legendary among Tahoe visitors. The general store sells the ice cream that has become a Camp Richardson rite of passage -- the line on summer afternoons stretches out the door.

Camp Richardson also offers cabins, a campground, and lodge rooms for overnight stays. In winter, the property transforms into a cross-country skiing and snowshoeing center with groomed trails through the surrounding forest.

Why Kids Love It

Camp Richardson is Tahoe's classic family lakefront resort -- a sandy beach, kayak and bike rentals, an ice cream shop, and a casual restaurant, all on the south shore of Lake Tahoe with pine trees and mountain views. It has the feel of a summer camp without the commitment.

The beach is long and sandy with gradual entry into the lake. Kids can swim, build sandcastles, and wade all day. Kayak and paddleboard rentals launch right from the beach, letting families paddle along the shoreline or out toward Emerald Bay. The bike path from Camp Richardson runs along the lake shore toward Emerald Bay -- one of the most scenic bike rides in the Sierra.

The ice cream shop at the general store is a Camp Richardson institution. After a day of swimming and biking, standing in line for a waffle cone while dripping lake water is the quintessential Tahoe family experience.
