About

Lil' Ricci's is a tiny, no-frills pizza shop on Evans Avenue near the University of Denver that serves what many Denver locals consider the best New York-style pizza in the city. For families, it offers something increasingly rare: an excellent, filling meal for four people for under $30, served in under 5 minutes, with zero pretension.

The pizza is the real thing -- large, thin, foldable slices with a slightly charred, chewy crust, tangy tomato sauce, and generous blankets of real mozzarella. The slices are enormous by any standard: easily 12 inches from tip to crust, requiring the traditional New York fold to eat without wearing it. Kids' eyes go wide when they see the size of a single slice.

For children under 10, one slice is a full meal. Adults typically eat two.

The cheese slice is the benchmark and the best order for first-timers. It is a showcase of good dough, balanced sauce, and quality cheese -- nothing more, nothing less. The pepperoni slice is excellent, with slightly curled, crisped pepperoni cups that pool little wells of oil.

The white slice (ricotta, mozzarella, garlic) is rich and indulgent. Daily specials rotate but the classics are the reason to come.

The experience is pure counter service. Walk in, look at the slices displayed behind the glass, point to what you want, and it is handed to you on a paper plate within seconds. No server, no menu deliberation, no waiting. For families with hungry, impatient kids, this speed is a godsend. A few small tables are inside, with a couple of outdoor tables available in warm weather.

Critical logistical note: Lil' Ricci's is CASH ONLY. They do not accept credit cards, debit cards, Apple Pay, or any electronic payment. Bring cash. There is no ATM inside -- the nearest one is a short walk down Evans Avenue. This trips up many first-time visitors, so come prepared.

The location near the University of Denver means the clientele is a mix of college students and neighborhood families. Weekend lunchtimes are the most family-friendly. Weekday and weekend evenings skew more toward the college crowd. The shop is small and can feel crowded at peak times, but the fast service keeps things moving.

Parking is available in a small lot behind the building and on Evans Avenue. The shop is an easy detour from the I-25 corridor and about 15 minutes from downtown Denver.

Plan Your Visit

Best Time to Visit

Lunch (11 AM-1 PM) for fresh slices right out of the oven. Dinner before 6 PM to beat the college crowd. Weekend lunch is the most family-friendly time.

Wait Times

Usually 5-10 minutes for counter service. Slices are pre-made and ready. Friday/Saturday dinner can have a short line but moves fast.

Nearby Food

This IS the food destination. But nearby on Evans Ave: Bonnie Brae Ice Cream (legendary Denver ice cream shop, $4-7, 10 min drive), Sushi Den (excellent sushi, $20-40, parents' date night caliber), and DU campus has a few coffee shops.

Why Kids Love It

The slices are massive -- legitimately New York-sized, foldable, with a thin, crispy crust and generous cheese. Kids who have never had real NY-style pizza are stunned by the size. You fold it in half and eat it like New Yorkers do. The cheese pull is incredible. Simple cheese slices are the best, but the pepperoni and white slices are also excellent.

The place is tiny and no-frills: a counter, a few tables, and pizza boxes stacked everywhere. There is no children's menu because the regular slices ARE the children's menu -- one slice is more than enough for any child under 10. The casualness is the point: no waits for a server, no menu deliberation, just walk up, point at the slice you want, and it is yours in 30 seconds.

For families used to Domino's and Pizza Hut, Lil' Ricci's is a revelation. This is what pizza is supposed to taste like: slightly charred crust, tangy sauce, real mozzarella. It is the kind of pizza that turns kids into pizza snobs. Every Denver parent who knows about this place brings their kids here, and every kid leaves demanding to come back.
