About
Denver Zoo is one of the top-rated zoos in the country, home to nearly 4,000 animals across 80 acres in the beautiful City Park neighborhood. It combines world-class animal habitats with genuine conservation programs, making it both entertaining and educational for families. The zoo underwent a major transformation with its multi-year master plan, resulting in modern, naturalistic habitats that give animals more space and visitors better viewing angles.
The undisputed highlight is Toyota Elephant Passage, one of the largest and most sophisticated elephant habitats in North America. This 10-acre complex houses Asian elephants in a multi-pool environment with underwater viewing windows where visitors watch elephants swim, play, and bathe. For kids, seeing a massive elephant glide through water right in front of their face through thick glass is genuinely awe-inspiring.
The habitat also houses rhinoceros, Malayan tapirs, and clouded leopards in connected but separate areas.
The giraffe encounter station allows visitors to hand-feed Rothschild's giraffes with lettuce leaves ($7 per feeding). Watching a giraffe's dark tongue wrap around a leaf held in a child's hand creates a connection with wildlife that no television show can replicate. The station operates on a first-come, first-served basis with feeding sessions throughout the day.
Lorikeet Adventure is a walk-through aviary where brightly colored Australian lorikeets fly freely. Purchase a small cup of nectar ($4) and hold it out -- within seconds, multiple lorikeets will land on your hand, arm, and shoulder to drink. The sensation of bird feet gripping your finger while they drink tickles and delights kids. This experience consistently ranks as a family favorite.
Other notable areas include Predator Ridge (African wild dogs, hyenas, and lions in a savanna setting), Bear Mountain (grizzly and polar bears), Primate Panorama (one of the most comprehensive primate collections in the U.S.), and the Tropical Discovery building (indoor rainforest with free-flying birds, reptiles, and a Komodo dragon). The latter is especially valuable on cold or rainy days.
The zoo's Conservation Carousel ($4/ride) features hand-carved endangered species -- kids ride snow leopards, sea turtles, and mountain gorillas instead of generic horses. It is beautiful and educational simultaneously. A miniature train ($4/ride) circles a portion of the zoo grounds.
Practical logistics: the zoo requires a free parking reservation booked online at denverzoo. org. Walk-ins may be turned away when the lot is full, which happens regularly on sunny weekends.
Book as soon as you know your visit date. The zoo is stroller-friendly throughout with paved, mostly flat paths. Nursing rooms with changing tables are near the main entrance and at the Tropical Discovery building.
Food options include multiple stands serving burgers, pizza, chicken tenders, and ice cream ($10-15 per meal). The zoo allows outside food, and many families pack a cooler and eat at one of the shaded picnic areas.
Denver's weather requires planning. Summer days are warm (80-95F) with frequent afternoon thunderstorms that blow through in 30-60 minutes -- bring rain jackets and find shelter in the indoor exhibits. Spring and fall are ideal (60-75F, mostly dry). Winter visits are possible since many exhibits are indoors, and fewer crowds mean intimate animal viewing, but some outdoor exhibits may be limited.
