About
The Denver Museum of Nature & Science is one of the premier natural history museums in the western United States and a cornerstone family destination in Denver. Perched on a hill in City Park with panoramic views of the Rocky Mountains from its east entrance, the museum houses an extraordinary collection spanning dinosaur paleontology, space science, wildlife biology, gems and minerals, and anthropology across 716,000 square feet of exhibit space.
The Prehistoric Journey is the museum's signature exhibit and the reason most families visit. This hall traces the history of life on Earth through spectacular fossil displays, including complete skeletons of Tyrannosaurus rex, Triceratops, Stegosaurus (Colorado's state fossil), and dozens of other prehistoric creatures. The centerpiece T.
rex mount is enormous and positioned at kid eye-level so children look up into its jaws. Interactive stations let kids compare dinosaur tooth shapes, examine real fossilized bones under magnifiers, and learn about the paleontological excavation process. For dinosaur-obsessed children -- and that is most children at some point -- this hall alone justifies the visit.
Space Odyssey is the museum's other world-class exhibit, exploring the solar system, Mars exploration, and the search for extraterrestrial life. Kids can touch a genuine Mars meteorite (one of only a handful on public display in the world), operate a robotic Mars rover simulation, and build and launch model rockets in a vacuum chamber. The exhibit is updated regularly with current NASA mission data and makes space science tangible rather than abstract.
The Gates Planetarium is consistently rated among the best planetariums in the country. The 125-seat dome theater presents immersive shows about deep space, the solar system, and cosmic phenomena using cutting-edge digital projection. Shows are about 25 minutes and worth the $7 add-on for kids ages 5 and up.
Younger children may find the darkness and volume overwhelming. An IMAX theater screens nature and science documentaries on a massive screen.
The Discovery Zone on Level 1 is specifically designed for children ages 3-8 and is an underappreciated gem. This hands-on area includes a fossil dig sandbox, water table, animal den crawl-through, and nature exploration stations. It is staffed by educators and provides a perfect break when younger kids need active play between the quieter exhibit halls.
Wildlife halls feature meticulously crafted dioramas showing Colorado and North American animals in their natural habitats. These old-school displays -- some dating to the 1930s -- have an artistry and detail that still impresses. The Gems and Minerals hall includes the stunning Tom's Baby gold nugget (the largest crystalized gold piece ever found in Colorado) and a geode collection that sparkles.
Practically, the museum is fully indoor and air-conditioned, making it an ideal rainy day or winter destination. It is stroller accessible with elevators between all four levels. The T-Rex Cafe serves salads, sandwiches, and kid-friendly options ($10-15). Parking is $15 in the on-site garage; free street parking along Colorado Boulevard fills up quickly.
The museum's location in City Park creates combination opportunities. Denver Zoo is across the park (a 10-minute walk or short drive), and the park itself has playgrounds, a lake with paddle boats, and those famous east-steps views of the Rocky Mountain skyline. A zoo-morning, museum-afternoon combo is a classic Denver family day.
