About
Denver Botanic Gardens occupies 24 acres in the heart of Denver, offering a diverse collection of themed gardens, a tropical conservatory, rotating art installations, and one of the best children's garden experiences in the country. While botanical gardens are not always the first destination families consider, the Mordecai Children's Garden and the gardens' exceptional seasonal programming make this a standout family attraction.
The Mordecai Children's Garden is the centerpiece for families and one of the finest children's garden designs in the western United States. This dedicated space is not a playground with plants -- it is an immersive nature experience where kids interact directly with earth, water, and living things. Features include a mountain stream with stepping stones and hand-operated water pumps, a pine forest with log balance beams, a vegetable garden where kids can help tend plants, a hay bale fort, a pioneer cabin for imaginative play, and digging areas with real soil and tools.
It is designed for ages 2-10 and provides 45-90 minutes of engaged outdoor play. Bring a change of clothes -- the water features are irresistible and kids will get wet.
Beyond the children's area, the main gardens offer visual beauty that families can appreciate at any pace. The Japanese Garden features a traditional tea house, koi pond, and stone lanterns. The Water Garden has lily pads and lotus flowers.
The Rock Alpine Garden showcases plants adapted to Colorado's extreme conditions. The Tropical Conservatory houses a lush indoor jungle environment that feels dramatically different from Denver's semi-arid climate -- warm, humid, and fragrant with orchids, bromeliads, and palms.
Seasonal programming elevates the gardens into a year-round family destination. Summer brings outdoor concert series and extended evening hours. Fall features a corn maze and harvest activities.
But the crown jewel is Blossoms of Light, a holiday event running from November through January where the entire garden is illuminated with hundreds of thousands of LED lights synchronized to music. Walking through the twinkling Japanese Garden and over the illuminated bridge is pure holiday magic for families. It is Denver's most popular seasonal event -- timed tickets sell out weeks in advance for prime dates.
The gardens also host rotating art installations, often large-scale sculptures integrated into the landscape. Past exhibitions have included Dale Chihuly glass works and Alexander Calder kinetic sculptures. These add an art dimension that engages older kids and teens.
Practically, the gardens require timed entry tickets purchased online -- walk-up admission may not be available on busy days. Admission is $16 for adults and $12 for kids 3-15. SCFD free days provide free general admission on select dates (check SCFD.org). Strollers are welcome throughout the gardens, though some narrow paths require navigating around other visitors.
There is no on-site parking lot. Street parking in the surrounding Congress Park and Cheesman Park neighborhoods is free on weekends and metered on weekdays. Popular spots fill quickly on weekend mornings -- arrive early. The Hive Garden Bistro inside the gardens serves seasonal meals and coffee ($12-18 entrees) with garden views.
