About
The Downtown Aquarium in Denver is a privately owned aquatic entertainment complex that combines traditional aquarium exhibits with a full-service restaurant, interactive experiences, and surprisingly, a Sumatran tiger exhibit. Located along the Platte River in downtown Denver, it is a convenient indoor family attraction that pairs well with the adjacent Children's Museum of Denver.
The aquarium houses over 500 species of marine and freshwater animals across themed exhibit areas. The North American exhibit features river otters, sturgeon, and trout in habitats mimicking Colorado's rivers and lakes. The Rainforest exhibit includes piranhas, poison dart frogs, and a two-toed sloth.
The Ocean Journey section is the centerpiece, featuring a long walk-through tunnel where sand tiger sharks, green sea turtles, stingrays, and tropical fish swim directly overhead and around you. For kids, walking through this tunnel is consistently the highlight -- the sensation of sharks gliding inches above your head through thick acrylic glass is thrilling.
The interactive experiences elevate the visit beyond passive viewing. The stingray touch pool ($5 for feeding, free to touch) lets visitors reach into shallow water and gently stroke cownose rays as they glide past. The Flash Reef touch tank has sea urchins, starfish, and horseshoe crabs.
A mermaid show runs on weekends (check schedule), and various feeding demonstrations happen throughout the day.
The Sumatran tiger exhibit is the aquarium's most unexpected attraction. A habitat housing endangered Sumatran tigers sits in the middle of the aquatic exhibits. Kids are inevitably surprised and delighted to find big cats in an aquarium. The tigers are active and visible in a well-designed space with underwater viewing of their swimming pool.
The aquarium-themed restaurant is a separate experience from the exhibit halls. Diners sit alongside a massive 150,000-gallon tank filled with fish, sharks, and rays. The food is standard American steakhouse and seafood (entrees $18-35), and the setting makes it a memorable family dinner even if the cuisine is not groundbreaking.
The restaurant does not require an aquarium ticket, and vice versa -- they are independent.
Managing expectations is important: the Downtown Aquarium is smaller and more commercial than major public aquariums like Monterey Bay, Shedd, or Georgia Aquarium. It is operated by Landry's restaurant group, so there is a noticeable commercial feel with an emphasis on dining and gift shop spending. The exhibit collection is respectable but not world-class.
However, for a 1. 5-2 hour family outing in Denver, especially on a rainy day or cold winter afternoon, it delivers solid entertainment value.
The aquarium is fully stroller accessible and climate controlled. Family restrooms with changing stations are available. Parking is free in the large lot. The Children's Museum of Denver is literally next door (a 2-minute walk), making it easy to combine both attractions in a single outing -- aquarium in the morning, lunch, children's museum in the afternoon for a full indoor family day.

Why Kids Love It
A walk-through underwater tunnel puts sharks, stingrays, and sea turtles swimming right overhead -- the closest most kids will ever get to a shark. The stingray touch pool lets kids feel their silky wings glide under their hands. A surprise tiger exhibit in the middle of an aquarium adds an unexpected thrill.
Pro Tips from Parents
- The underwater tunnel is the highlight -- take your time and let kids watch the sharks circle overhead
- The Sumatran tiger exhibit is unexpectedly excellent for an aquarium -- kids are fascinated
