About
The Boston Public Garden is the most beautiful park in the city and one of the most charming urban parks in America. Established in 1837, it's the country's first public botanical garden, and it looks the part — formal flower beds, a graceful suspension bridge, weeping willows draped over a lagoon, and the bronze ducklings from Robert McCloskey's beloved 1941 children's book.
The Make Way for Ducklings statues are the must-do for families with young kids. Located near the Charles Street entrance, the eight bronze ducklings follow Mrs. Mallard in a procession across the pathway. Kids who know the book (read it before you go) light up when they see the statues. Kids who don't know the book still enjoy climbing on bronze ducks. Either way, you're getting the photo.
The swan boats have been operating on the garden lagoon since 1877, making them one of the oldest continuously operated amusement rides in the country. Each boat is pedal-powered by a driver seated behind a large swan figure, and carries about 20 passengers on a 12-minute loop around the lagoon. The pace is gentle, the views are lovely, and young kids find the experience magical.
At $4. 50/adult and $3/child, it's remarkably affordable.
The Public Garden sits directly adjacent to Boston Common (separated by Charles Street), and most families visit both in a single outing. The Common is better for active play (playground, Frog Pond), while the Garden is better for beauty and gentle exploration. Together they offer 2-3 hours of free-to-cheap family activity in the heart of the city.

Why Kids Love It
The Boston Public Garden is the oldest public botanical garden in the country, and for kids, it's three things: the Make Way for Ducklings statue, the swan boats, and actual ducks. Read Robert McCloskey's 'Make Way for Ducklings' before you go — it's set in this exact garden — and then let your kids sit on the bronze duckling statues (Mrs. Mallard leading Jack, Kack, Lack, Mack, Nack, Ouack, Pack, and Quack) for the mandatory photo.
The swan boats have been operating on the garden lagoon since 1877. They're pedal-powered boats shaped like swans, each carrying about 20 passengers on a 12-minute loop around the lagoon. It's gentle, beautiful, and young kids find it enchanting. At $4.50 for adults and $3 for kids, it's one of the best values in the city.
The garden itself is gorgeous — manicured flower beds, a suspension bridge over the lagoon, massive willow trees, and real ducks and swans on the water. Toddlers chase the ducks (and sometimes the ducks chase the toddlers). The whole experience is soft, green, and calming — the opposite of urban sensory overload.
Pro Tips from Parents
- Read 'Make Way for Ducklings' to your kids before the trip — the duckling statues come alive when they know the story
- The duckling statues are on the Charles Street side of the garden — enter from Charles Street to find them easily
- Swan boat lines are shortest right at 10 AM opening on weekdays; weekend afternoons can have 30-minute waits
- The garden is right next to Boston Common — combine both for a full morning (Common for running, Garden for beauty)
- May and early June are the best times for flower displays; the tulip beds are spectacular
What to Bring
- Camera for the duckling statues
