About
The Congress Avenue Bridge in downtown Austin is home to the largest urban bat colony in North America, approximately 1.5 million Mexican free-tailed bats that roost in the bridge's expansion joints from March through October. Every evening at dusk, the colony emerges in a spectacular, continuous stream that flows across the sunset sky.
The bats began colonizing the bridge after its 1980 reconstruction created crevices ideal for roosting. The colony consumes an estimated 10,000-20,000 pounds of insects per night, providing natural pest control for the region.
Viewing locations offer different perspectives. Standing on the bridge itself (southeast sidewalk) puts you directly above the emergence point. The Ann and Roy Butler Hike-and-Bike Trail on the south bank positions you below the bridge, where the bat column passes overhead. Both views are excellent.
Timing is important. Arrive 30-45 minutes before sunset to claim a good viewing position. Peak colony size occurs in July-August. The experience pairs naturally with dinner in downtown Austin.

Why Kids Love It
Every evening from March through October, approximately 1.5 million Mexican free-tailed bats emerge from under the Congress Avenue Bridge in a massive, swirling column that streams across the Austin sky. It is one of the largest urban bat colonies in the world, and watching it happen is free and unforgettable.
The emergence builds slowly, then suddenly the sky fills with a continuous ribbon of bats streaming southward. The whole event takes 20-45 minutes and happens right at dusk when the sky is painted in sunset colors. Kids are simultaneously fascinated and slightly spooked, which is the perfect combination.
The educational angle reinforces the experience: each bat eats 10,000-20,000 insects per night. Kids learn that bats are not scary but essential.
